GRETA JOHNSON Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Aug. 8 to Aug. 10, 2015.
JOHNSON, Greta Catherine
(nee McMillan)
April 13, 1918 – August 3, 2015
Age 97 years, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2015 at Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon, SK, going with the Lord Jesus to her forever home in heaven. Greta was born April 13, 1918 in Juniata, SK (Asquith). After her marriage to Bert Johnson in 1940, they lived in Maymont, SK, Bagotville, QC, and Saskatoon, SK, before settling in North Battleford in 1950 where she lovingly raised a family of seven children, and humbly served the Lord as a homemaker and pastor's wife. We fondly remember her as a hard working woman of great faith, character and strength. During her life she blessed family and friends with her stories, freshly baked bread and pies, beautiful hand-made quilts, and her fun-loving manner. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel to China and Scotland, and amazingly at the age of 90, to Israel. Greta was a life-time learner, honing her skills as a pianist and quilter, learning to swim in her retirement years and to use a computer in her 80s. A spirit of joy and laughter characterized her as she determinedly lived a life of thanksgiving to the Lord in every circumstance. Her joyful, loving heart was reflected in her beautiful smile which was treasured in her last years by family, friends and caregivers. Greta was predeceased by her loving husband Bert, her parents, Alex and Edith McMillan; her brothers: Don MacMillan, his wife Helen and their daughter Barb; and Wallace McMillan and his son Dale. She is survived by her beloved children and grandchildren: Wendy (Art) Newsham and children Susan (Scott), Rob (Kellie) and Ann (Steve); Wayne (Marjorie) and children Jenny (Phil), Ellick (Nicole) and Karla (Aaron); Will(Cheryl) and children Shane (Nicole), Jeremy (Crystal), Autumn (Shaun), Breeann (Mike); Edie (Aron) May and children of Ede and her deceased husband Evans Griffith, Darcia (Wayne) and Darren (Teresa); Paul (Laura) and children Elisa (Alex), Luke (Tricia), Corinne and Matt (Jill); Jean Pfeifer and children Katie, Jayme and Julie and their dad Joe; and Melvin (Trudy) and his children Yisrael (Genevieve), Kevin (Annie), Christopher (Danielle), and David (Hannah) and their mother Sharon; 42 great- grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; her sister-in-law, Wilda McMillan, and many nephews and nieces. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 1:30 p.m. at Territorial Drive Alliance Church, 2302 Clements Dr. in North Battleford, SK., followed by a reception. Interment will follow at the Veteran's Section, Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, North Battleford, SK. A public viewing will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Battlefords Funeral Service, 1332-100th Street, North Battleford, SK. The Johnson family extend their gratitude to special friends Evelyn DeBruin and June Cathcart, and to the staff at Stensrud Lodge, for their loving care of Mom in her last years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greta Johnson Memorial Fund, Community Baptist Church, 2622 Campbell Cres., North Battleford, SK. S9A 3S2.

To the Family
I enjoyed reading the great tribute you wrote for your Mom. I've been sharing my own stories with my son Kevin who I now live with here in BC. I thank God for the memories of having your Mom and Dad visit Ray and Me at the farm.
"Graduation day" should always be looked upon as a happy day! I look forward to meeting your Mom and Dad again! Remember to cherish the memories and take to heart the lessons she taught you, God Bless you all, family of Burt and Greta Johnson.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the Johnson Clan. Only learning today, August 11, of Auntie Greta's passing, has prevented us from being able to attend the funeral service to celebrate her life.
Sincere condolences,

As a child there were memorable visits with Uncle Bert and Auntie Greta in Calgary and one in Edmonton when I was newly married. In Toronto , we saw Uncle Bert and Auntie Greta a few times.I have mostly seen Wendy and Melvin in these more recent years and have enjoyed trading stories of our parents. She was our last family member of that generation. You are all in our thoughts, Cheryl (Goodfellow) and John Rowlands and family

I have fond memories of Greta and Bert visiting with mom and dad, Joy (Briscoe) and Albert Horner. She was always so gracious and had such a lovely smile. In recent years, it has been great to keep in touch with Will and Cheryl. Condolences to all the "Johnson" clan.

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. I was sorry to hear of your loss. Though I never knew Greta, I do know Jean Pfeifer and her family and if they are any indication of who Greta was, she seems like a pretty amazing person.
