Claud THOMPSON Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jul. 22 to Jul. 29, 2017.
THOMPSON, Claud
The Rev. Dr. Claud A. Thompson died on July 3, 2017 at home in Nanaimo after a brief battle with liver cancer. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis, his son, David, and his sister, Maxine. He was predeceased by his parents, Claud Sr. and Emily, and his brother, Franklin. Originally from the States, Claud and Phyllis moved to Canada and Saskatoon in 1970 when Claud began teaching at the University of Saskatchewan. His tenure there, in both the College of Arts & Science's English Department and that College's Dean's Office, ended in 1998 when Claud and Phyllis retired to Nanaimo, BC. During his years in Saskatoon, Claud was involved in the Anglican diocese; he also had interaction with the College of Emmanuel & St. Chad and St. Andrew's College. Once retired, he spent many years as a Hospice volunteer in the Nanaimo Hospital's palliative care unit. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held on August 9, 2017 at St. Mary's Anglican Church in Nanoose Bay, BC. Donations in Claud's memory can be made to that church (2600 Powder Point Road, Nanoose Bay, BC V9P 9E8) or to Loaves & Fishes, a Nanaimo food bank (1009 Farquhar Street, Nanaimo, BC V9R 2G2).

My condolences for your loss.

I took first year English with Professor Thompson in 1983 after completing an Engineering degree at the U of S. I loved his classes I still have the papers I wrote in his class. His encouragement set me on a new path in my life and I am forever grateful for that.

Claud was Head of the English Department at U of S when I gained my doctorate in English in 1985. I'm very sorry that this is so late (I live in England) but I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing. He was a kind and courteous man, an excellent academic and very helpful to me in my work.

Claud was a classmate of ours and a very dear friend of our family. We were sorry to lose touch over the years.

To Claud's family: I am very sorry for your loss. Although I knew him only for a six years at the U of S, I have cherished his model of compassion in academia. Peace be with you all at this difficult time.

Saddened to learn of Claud passing away. Margaret and I send our condolences, Phyllis. Claud was a gentle-man and I was pleased to work with him over several years and benefitted greatly from his experience and wise advice at the UofS.

A wonderful man. I grew very fond of Claud while spending a year in the Dean's office when he was Acting Dead. "I do not make any appointments or attend any meetings before 10AM."
