Laura Summach Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 5 to Mar. 6, 2010.
Laura Irene (Laurene) Summach It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Laura Irene (Laurene) Summach. On March 3rd, 2010 our mom entered the gates of heaven where her Lord and Saviour and our Dad were waiting. Mom was a lady of great strength, beauty, and grace; she loved unconditionally. Laurene was born on October 3rd, 1926 at the Dodsland Hospital. She was the third child born to Daniel and Myrtle Bateman, sister to Ken and Merna. Mom grew up on the family farm near Kelfield, caring for ponies, dogs, chickens, piglets, and of course, kittens. She attended Ivy School, a one room country school, and Druid high school. Mom's childhood friends remained dear to her throughout her life. They tell us that Mom was a very good athlete, even winning a speed skating competition in high school! As a young girl, Mom developed a passion for music and became an accomplished pianist even though she never read a note of music. In 1946, she took a business course at the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate and then worked as a secretary at MacCoshams. Laurene married Frederick Summach in 1951 and for 55 years they farmed south of Asquith on the family homestead. Mom and Dad raised five daughters and Mom was especially devoted to our youngest sister, Marni, who was born with special needs. Mom made many daily and weekly trips to the School for the Deaf while keeping things running smoothly on the farm. Mom was a fabulous cook and gardener. We will forever remember her on a warm summer day working in the garden, weeding her beautiful flowers, baking cinnamon buns and apple pies, making jam, slipping into town to play the piano for someone, and still being able to run morning coffee, lunch, afternoon coffee , supper, and evening coffee out to the field. Friends and family were always welcome to join us around the kitchen table or in the field for a great home cooked meal. Later on, no one enjoyed these visits more than the grandkids. They had a very special grandma. Mom had a servant's heart. She gave her life to Jesus as a young girl and quietly served Him through her gift of music, love of crafting and planning special events. She touched the lives of many young ladies at the Asquith Baptist Church throughout her many years of service at Asquith. Those who knew her were inspired by her beautiful spirit of kindness. Mom was Dad's constant companion, what would he have done without her! They loved to travel together and enjoyed many winters in Arizona. As Dad's health failed, Mom was relied upon even more and in 2004 they moved to Emmanuel Village in Saskatoon. Mom kept busy doing the things she always loved to do until a disease of the nervous system slowly began to take those pleasures away. Our hearts warmed to see Dad caring for our Mom until his death a little over a year ago. Their love for each other was unfailing. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mom's wonderful caregiver, Arlene, the home care workers who cared for Mom over the past two years and most recently Circle Drive Alliance Care Home. We have been blessed beyond measure and we will dearly miss our Mom and grandma. Her loving family: Colleen (Dave) Hancharuk, Dustin; Cheryl (Reg) Anholt, Devon, Ashley, Landon; Shawna (Lanny) Schmidt, Braden, Rylan, MacKenzie; Candace (Darrell) Remai, Bronson, Samson; and Marni Summach. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 8th, at 3:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church (1636 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK) to celebrate her life and mourn her passing. Donations gratefully accepted for Cosmopolitan Industries or Elmwood Residences Inc. Arrangements in care of Sue Panattoni MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).

To the entire Summach family I just wanted to let you know how much your parents meant to me. I really only knew Candace (and then only a little) and Marni. My oldest brother Bill was closer to Candace's age.

I was 7 when we moved to Asquith and the two people I have the first memories of are Laurene and Barb Rousell. They were both so sweet to me and treated me like my Aunties always treated me. Whenever I was with them, I felt like I had come "home". I just felt at peace and incredibly happy.

I was always struck by your mother's incredible beauty. Even at 7 years old, I don't remember her seeming "old" to me. You know when you are that age, 30 seems OLD. :) She was so full of life and love and was one of the most gorgeous women I had ever seen. I spent a lot of time at the Asquith Baptist church and she was always there playing her beautiful music and making me feel very special. I don't even know what she did, but I felt very loved. Your Dad too! I remember him making me laugh and being really silly and fun. They reminded me so much of some of my Aunties and Uncles on my Mother's side, who lived up near PA. I just loved any time spent with them and looked forward to seeing them.

I am glad that they are together now and I loved reading all this about your mother. Your family are all in my prayers:)

Our thoughts are with you girls these days and your families. Lots of fond memories of the farm down the road. Loved to make trips on the motorbikes down there. Your mom had such a gentle friendly manner that made everyone so welcome. We miss them all. Take care.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

Whem I arrived in 1961 at Asquith as a young lad, Fred and Laureen became almost "parents" to me. Laureen impressed me with her kindness and dedication to the Lord . She has followed Fred in the presence of the Lord. We'll meet them there. What a great assurance. With our love.

Dear Colleen, Cheryl, Shawna, Candace and Marni and to Dave, Reg, Lanny and Darrell and all the Kids;
As you may know Catherine and I are in Perth visiting Andrew and Neesh and we return home Tuesday. We won't able to attend your Moms memorial physically but we will be attending in spirit.
Wow! How time flies and things change. Just had a good chat with my mom this morning and she was relating all the good memories she has still of 'farm life' and raising us all along side you 'troublemakers' ha ha. It's funny the things Mom remembers most is what you wrote about; coffee and cake and laughing and visiting and the 300 odd choruses they all seemed to have memorized and sang together. She can still recall Dad playing and singing with her chorus after chorus on his guitar. I'm sure you have those same great memories of your Mom as well. In 30 years we'll be where they are age wise. I say we make our life count as they all have and in fact go on and do even better! At the risk of sounding cliche, the time we are going through is sad but glad but for your Mom and Dad we know it's well, "Well It's a great day in Heaven"! God bless you all for honouring your parents. You are to be commended on creating a heritage for your children's children. Remember "children honour your parents" is the first commandment we are given as children for it contains the promise " for you will live long and prosper and be in good health" (my paraphrased version).
Love you guys and see you in the future,
Kevin, Catherine, Andrew, Venetia, Sterling, Sheleen and "Aunt" Jennie
