"Mom's passions: faith, family, nursing, and people"
Bernice passed away peacefully at St. Ann's Home at the age of 86 years. Mom had the gift of faith, she truly believed God guided her throughout her life. Everyone she met walked away feeling better about themselves as she had the gift of the heart. Mom loved to entertain and had a great sense of humor. She was such a gracious woman. Born in Saskatoon, Mom was raised in several small communities throughout Saskatchewan as her Dad was a grain buyer. In 1945, Mom entered the St. Paul's Hospital Grey Nun's school of nursing. At graduation she was presented with the "Devotion to Duty" Award. In 1948 she moved to Delisle to nurse. Shortly afterward she met Dad. Married in 1951, they raised 6 children on the farm at Donavon. In 1980, they retired to Saskatoon. Mom spent many hours volunteering; driving cancer clinic patients, caring for St. Ann's residents and sharing her personal cancer story with school children. She is loved and remembered by her children, Ron (Brenda) Ritz, Susan (Dave) Thompson, Lois (Pat) Spizawka, Paula Ritz, Kevin Ritz (Donna Bast), and Karen Ritz; 13 grandchildren, Stephanie (Brett) Nixon; Taylor (Lise) Ritz, Derek Ritz, Jennifer, Janis, Heather (Brett) and Courtney Thompson; Lauren (Allen), Kurt (Kristen), Nick and Julie Spizawka; Mandy and Liana Ritz; 6 great grandchildren, Dalin and Nora Nixon; April and Landon Ritz; Nevaeh Babb and Khalil Thompson; sister-in-law, Mildred Dommes; brother-in- law, Edwin Ritz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
