John was born March 15, 1928 in Waldheim, Sask. As an infant the family moved to Warman, SK where he took his schooling. At age 14 he left home and started in the work force doing jobs here and there until he joined the Army and RCAF. John had a very fulfilling career in the military, first joining the Army and hoping to go to fight for his country in Europe. He was sent to Maple Creek, SK and Shilo, MB first for training and then to Halifax NS to be shipped out at which time it was determined he was underage. Back to Regina for an honourable release and Saskatoon where he worked for the postal service. Still determined to be a Military man he joined the RCAF in 1945, and was a proud Fire Fighter for 24 years. He was stationed in many places, Portage La Prairie, MB, Monton, ON, Winnipeg, MB, Suffied, AB, Saskatoon, SK, Rivers, MB, Fort Nelson, BC and then to Toronto, ON where he met the love of his life, Mary Etta Bennett, and was married February 9, 1952. After being married they moved to Sea Island, BC. and then went by ship to Germany for a tour of duty. Returned to Canada and to Red Deer, AB, Parent, PQ, Kamloops, BC and his final posting was Moose Jaw, SK where he retired in 1969.They then moved to New Westminster, BC, owned a resort in Mara Lake, BC, and managed the Grey Motel on 8th Street in Saskatoon. They then owned J&R Confectionary Store on Avenue P and 20th Street for a few years. During this time he and his wife spent many winters in the USA travelling and camping and finally buying a Park Model Trailer in Yuma Arizona where they went from October to April, living the summer months in Saskatoon. John still resided in Saskatoon but was determined to still go back to Yuma and warmer winter climate. In 2006 John purchased a lot at the Resort Village of Aquadeo and in 2007 he built and moved a cabin to the lake. John loved the peace and quiet at the lake where he walked his dog Lance numerous times in a day and sitting on his deck enjoying the view of Jackfish Lake. He loved his sports and was a true Toronto Maple Leaf fan and a Blue Jays fan. He loved to golf, fish, and build and fly model airplanes. John became close to many friends and neighbours in Aquadeo the last seven years and they surely will miss his smile, wave or tip of the hat. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Roger Keith and his secretary Mary Ellen, the nursing staff on the 5th floor at RUH for the special attention they gave him over these last few months and other friends and family who gave their time to John to make things easier for him. The Funeral Service will be held at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon SK. on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. officiated by his nephew Callin Friesen.
