Belvin Kennedy COLUMBIA - Belvin Thain Kennedy, 94, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2013. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, April 25, 1919, a son of the late Oma Myrtle Thain Kennedy, and David James Kennedy. He was predeceased by a brother, David James Kennedy Jr., and sister, Avery Stewart. He worked at Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company at the beginning of WWII, and enlisted in the Army where he served in England and France. Mr. Kennedy fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and ran a motor pool in France. He was awarded two Purple Hearts. After serving his country Mr. Kennedy returned to Thain's Auto Service in Columbia, where he worked for 50 years as an automobile mechanic. Mr. Kennedy was a member of Rosewood Baptist Church. He was a commander of Amvets Post 2, Chef De Gare of the 40&8, a member of VFW 641, and a lifetime member of American Legion Post number 6. He loved his motorcycles and was the last surviving member of the Palmetto Motorcycle Club. Survivors include his beloved wife, Leola Hucks Kennedy; sister, Bruce Ridgeway; his children, Diane Kennedy (Bruce Coker), Paul Kennedy (Olivia), Laurie Coates (Rick) of Tennessee, stepson, Tony Harper (Beverly); grandchildren, Nicole Baker, Erin Coates, Brian Coates, Kathryn Kartanos, Austin Kennedy and Adam Price; five great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and his much loved dog, Lilly. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Rosewood Baptist Church with burial following in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
