Carl Bauguess Obituary

COLUMBIA - Dr. Carl T. Bauguess Jr., widower of Pauline 'Polly' Bauguess, died January 29, 2011.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street in Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Dr. Bauguess was born September 30, 1928, in Lancaster, Pa., a son of the late C.T. and Ethel Bauguess. Dr. Bauguess began a pharmaceutical career many years ago as a 'drugstore cowboy.' This interest led him to receiving a B.S. and M.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina and a Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi. After teaching positions at U.N.C. and Northeast L.S.U., he came to the University of South Carolina where he eventually became Professor of Pharmaceutics in the College of Pharmacy and graduate program director of the College of Pharmacy. He was involved in many research activities. He participated in many grants and research proposals.

He was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church and an avid U.N.C. as well as a U.S.C. fan. He was also proud of his service as a member of Kiwanis International and Meals on Wheels program. He was a member of the Columbia Sailing Club and an avid sailor of his Helm's sailboat.

He is survived by a brother, Brent Bauguess (Linda), a sister, Glenna White, sisters-in-law, Myrtle Bauguess, Annie Lure Bahnson, Mary McGhee and Jane Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sister Care Inc., P.O. Box 1029, Columbia, SC 29202 or the Cooperative Ministry, 3821 W. Beltline Blvd., Columbia, SC 29204.

I'm so sorry to hear of Carl's passing. My dad, Jim Plaxco, taught with him at the College of Pharmacy. I fondly remember a trip to Pawley's Island when Carl and Polly (and the two gray poodles) accompanied my parents and me for the weekend.

Carl and I were first cousins. We did not live close growing up and we had very little contact. I got to know Carl at the Bauguess reunion several years ago. After several conservations, I knew that I had missed a lot by not knowing him better. He will be missed by family members as well as his many friends.

Doc was at the nursing home with my parents. We got to know him cause he offered to move so that my parents could have two room side by side. He also ate at the table with them. He was a very kind man who will be missed by many. Rest in peace Doc.
