Hazel Shuler Obituary

SANTEE — Mrs. Hazel Shuler Shuler, 96, of Santee, widow of Millard Fillmore Shuler, Jr., died Monday, September 14, 2009, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
 
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Nancy Freeman Stringer Chapel at the Oaks in Orangeburg with Rev. Kermit Shrawder and Rev. Karen Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the Island Cemetery, Santee.
 
Mrs. Shuler was born in the Providence Community of Orangeburg County, on November 23, 1912, the eldest child of the late Percival Norman Shuler and Lillie Felkel Shuler. She had been a resident of The Oaks of Orangeburg for a number of years. Prior to declining health, she was active in women’s work and the Philathia Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Elloree where she was a member. A loving mother and grandmother, she was affectionately known as “Mudo” by most, and was an exceptionally talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her family and friends.
 
Surviving are sons, Ted C. Shuler of Santee, Charles V. Shuler of Holly Hill, and Kenneth Shuler and wife, Angie, of Lexington; daughters, Vera Stroman of Orangeburg, and Sylvia Skinner and husband, Sidney, of Columbia; and a sister-in-law, Mildred F. Shuler of Santee. In addition, she is survived by sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves her devoted caregiver, Angie Gilyard of Orangeburg.
 
She was preceded in death by her beloved son-in-law, Arthur C. Stroman of Orangeburg; daughters-in-law, Ruth G. Shuler of Santee, and Louise H. Shuler of Holly Hill; a sister, Lois S. Regan; and brothers, Otis N. Shuler and J. Frederick Shuler.
 
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Tuesday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill.
 
Memorials may be made to the Patient Assistance Fund at The Oaks, PO Drawer 9005, Orangeburg, SC 29116, or Island Cemetery, C/O Mrs. Diane Powers, 303 Gransplace Lane, Santee, SC 29142, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Charles V. Shuler and family, Our thoughts are with all on the loss of your dear mother. Sorry we did not make the funeral. We did not hear about it till late day on the 15th. You are in our prayers.
