Dorothy Ballard Obituary

Dorothy Louise Crisp Ballard COLUMBIA - On Thursday, August 6, 2015, our mother & "Nanny," Dorothy "Dot" C. Ballard, took her final earthly breath surrounded by her family. Dot is survived by her devoted daughters Margaret "Bunny" Carns (Bubba) and Beverly Catoe; special daughters-in-law Alice Perritt and Cynthia Ballard; son-in-law Paul Kaminer; grandchildren: Brian Catoe (Jen), Beth Carns Kahrimanovic (Denis), Angela Ballard Adams (Dottie), Ben Carns (Cameron), Jacob Perritt (Krystal), Noah Perritt, Matthew Kaminer, Micah Kaminer and Mark Kaminer (Keneedra); sister Jenny Crisp Hale; brother James Oliver Crisp (Bets); sister-in-law Winnie Ballard and many dear nieces, nephews, extended and "adopted" family members. She had an extra special place in her heart for her great grandchildren: Luke, Jack, Nathan, Sam, Josh, Callie, Kaelynn and Cooper. She was predeceased by her son, William "Bill" Everett Ballard, daughter, Rebecca Ballard Kaminer, granddaughter, Ashley Porter Ballard; sisters, Lakey Crisp, Constance Crisp Perry; brothers, Eugene Crisp and William Crisp, sister-in-law, Irene Flowers Crisp, brothers-in-law, William Hale and Jerry P. Ballard and son-in-law, Wayne Catoe. Dot was born in Almond, NC, on July 21, 1931, to William Franklin and Maggie Woodard Crisp. When Dot was young, her family moved to New Bern where she attended school. In the mid 1950s, she and her young family moved to South Carolina where she became an active member of First Baptist Church of Columbia, was a member of the Deborah Agape Sunday School class and the evening Baptist WMU circle. She taught 3rd grade Sunday School for 48 years where she treasured the relationships that were formed with those children, their families, and her fellow teachers. She worked as a dental assistant for 43 years first for Dr. Sherrod Bumgardner and then for Dr. Alex Jenkins. For the past 11 years she worked with her daughter-in-law at HoFP Gallery. She formed very special friendships with her employers and their families, her co-workers, patients and clients. Dot was an impeccable hostess and wonderful cook. Many have had the pleasure of experiencing Sunday dinner and holidays around her large dining room table where she always found room for one more! Her favorite hobbies were reading, playing cards (Canasta and Liverpool Rummy), traveling to North Carolina and the South Carolina coast, and spending time with her precious family. Above all she had a deep love for God, an unwavering faith, and Christ-like character. Her sweet spirit and servant's heart will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her. Her memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. in the Boyce Chapel of First Baptist Church of Columbia, with visitation following in the Ellis Hall. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memorials may be sent to the Children's Ministry at FBC of Columbia, or Campus Crusade for Christ. The family would like to thank the staff of Lexington Medical Center especially the ICU teamfor their compassionate care and thoughtfulness. "Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates." I have many fond memories of Mrs. Ballard. She always welcomed me and quite often shared whatever supper was being had
( KRAFT Mac and Cheese, Lesueur peas and tea sweetened with saccharine.) She loved to decorate her mantle year round with magnolia blossoms and leaves. Being a good Baptist, she definitely knew how to bake a great rum cake! My paramount memory is how Mrs. Ballard always would include and share herself and her possessions lovingly and without expectation of return. Thank you, Mrs. Ballard for the kindness and love you gave to me. May your memory be a blessing. Love, Mary Deann

I am so sorry for your loss. Dot was my dear friend and the sweetest lady ever. She touched the lives of all three of our daughters in third grade Sunday School. She lived for God and made a difference in my life as well. I am so sorry she is no longer on this Earth, but Heaven certainly welcomed her with open arms and God greeted her saying, "Well done, Dot. Well done." I will miss her greatly.

What a PRECIOUS, GODLY woman Dot was! She deeply loved everyone. Her friends became like family. She was loving, loyal, devoted, kind, and generous! She was a woman of many talents; no one baked cupcakes like Dot! They became known as "dot cakes" to me.She had a servant's heart and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. To know Dot was to love her! Thoughts and prayers for her loved ones! The world is a better place because of DOT! Forever in our hearts!

Bunny, Beverly and family: Dot was the sweetest lady I've ever met. The sad part about life is that it goes so fast and there is never enough time to really spend with people we admire or care about. Though I've known Dot for many years, did not get to see her much, always when we saw each other it was as if it were yesterday....she was never exclusive in her caring and loving people. Please know of my thoughts and prayers during this time of celebration of Dot's life. She is sitting at the feet of Jesus of whom she loved.

Saying goodbye will be one of the most painful moments tomorrow. I rest solely in the fact that I know she's with Jesus and that He is perfect and His timing is not arbitrary. Nanny's impact is nearly incalculable and I feel so privileged to have been on the receiving end of it over the years. May we all learn to love and forgive like she did, for then our world would be a better place.

Nanny touched my heart as she did so many other. Her whole life was spent in God's service. Her warm, caring way was felt by all and she just had a way of putting a smile on your face, whatever the circumstances. Heaven gained a soul, but Nanny lives on in all of our hearts and one day, we too, will cross over and see her again. Thank you God for allowing me to know and love her.

"Grace was in her every step, heaven in her eyes, in every gesture, dignity and love".
Mrs. B's greatest asset was her ability to love unconditionally. Rest in peace.

These are precious memories you will always have. Her love and the love you share, will always be with each of you. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I'm so heartbroken to hear of the family's loss at this time of such a sweet lady! Ms. Dot was such a wonderful role model to the third grade Sunday School girls. She always would ask me how my sweet Mama was doing. Our family will be praying for your family during this time of separation. One day, we will be with our loved ones again as Believers in Christ. What a wonderful reunion that will be!
