Rhett Wolfe Obituary

Rhett Oliver Wolfe COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Rhett Oliver Wolfe will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Glenda and Rhett's home. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Rhett died on August 8, 2014. Born September 18, 1948, in Columbia, S.C., he attended Schneider Elementary, Hand Middle, and Dreher High Schools. He graduated with a degree in business administration from The Citadel in 1970 (F Troop) and earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. Rhett also served in the U.S. Army in Germany, returning to Columbia in 1975 to start a real estate career that he loved until his last day. He was Broker in Charge and partner at The Wolfe Co., Inc., with his brothers, Jack and Dana, who all followed their father into the residential real estate and property management business. Rhett was predeceased by his parents, Marie Ulmer Wolfe and Oliver Jordan Wolfe, and his wife of 40 years, Kent Doty Wolfe. He married the second love of his life, Glenda Plyler Wolfe, in 2012. Together, they were the grandparents to six lucky children. They called him Top. Rhett was known for his kindness, fairness, determined optimism, goofy humor, and hard work on behalf of his family, friends, clients, and the countless people he met through volunteering in the Midlands community and in Haiti. He often ended blessings at meals with "let us be mindful of the needs of others, and help us do something about it." His faith in God was strong in good times and bad and grew even stronger in the last few years, as he suffered the loss of his first wife and experienced the joy of finding his second. His brothers would catch him praying in his office or reading devotionals and saw his compassionate spirit demonstrated in countless ways, from playing Santa Claus for the children at The Nurturing Center every Christmas, to hamming it up with his grandchildren at Halloween, to donating and encouraging others to donate to organizations that made other people's lives better. His family and friends will especially miss his solo performance every December 24th of "Twas the Night Before Christmas;" he played every role except the reindeer, as there were always plenty of children to prance around in antlers. One of Rhett's favorite places in the world was Kanuga in Hendersonville, N.C., where he spent a week every summer and met lifelong friends. He especially loved being there with his and Glenda's grandchildren. Rhett played tennis at The Citadel and never stopped loving the game. He liked to win and usually did. He enjoyed coaching sports as much as playing and said that if he ever won the lottery, he would pay what it takes to learn how to be the best girls basketball coach he could be. Even after his children aged out of church and school leagues, he went back to teach a new generation how to dribble and shoot and, above all, practice good sportsmanship. He earned many awards and titles in tennis, but his favorite trophy was the one he received as a teenager for Best Sportsmanship. Rhett was very involved in several professional and civic organizations, serving on the Board of Advisors for the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business, The Nurturing Center Board of Directors, Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina Board of Trustees, Kanuga Episcopal Board of Visitors, Community Advisory Board for Home Works of South Carolina, and the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral as Senior Warden, among many others. Rhett and Glenda became co-chairs last year for the Campaign for Cange, working with the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina to raise funds to support a secondary school and other development projects in Haiti's Central Plateau region. Rhett is survived by his wife, Glenda; his four children, Anne Logan Wolfe Postic (Alex), Elizabeth Kent Wolfe, Mary "Molly" Oliver Wolfe, and Barkley Doty Wolfe; and stepchildren, Allison Kaylor Anders (Jason) and Jason Michael Kaylor (fianc e April Williams). He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Betsy Wolfe (Ed Jacobson), Jack Wolfe (Kathy), George Wolfe, Judy Bouknight (John), Susan Wolfe, and Dana Wolfe (Wendi); his brother-in-law, Gordon Doty (Katherine) and sister-in-law, Julie Doty. He will also be missed by his grandsons, Oliver, Xander and Jack Postic; step-grandchildren, Addie, Thomas, and Henry Anders; and 14 nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Campaign for Cange, 1115 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201; Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC 29201; or a charity of one's choice. To The Family of Rhett O. Wolfe. There are not enough words to express the love and kindness that Rhett shared with people of all walks of life on this earth. My husband and I taught two of his children Sunday School and little did we know that 20 plus years later he would just recently be mentoring our middle daughter as she bought her first home. Always a gentleman and a wonderful "father figure" to so many as they search/ed to find that perfect home. May he Shine from above as he did on this earth. You will be missed but never forgotten and may we all learn to live life with the passion and compassion that you shared with this earthly world. August 11, 2014

When my daughter moved to Columbia from Charlotte four years ago, we were referred to Rhett by a mutual friend at Trinity Cathedral. He showed her numerous rental properties then and recently when she was ready to buy, she called him to be her buyer's agent. She just closed July 30 on a property he helped her buy. He was so kind and helpful during both processes, looking out for her interests in almost a fatherly way. He seemed to share her excitement at finding her "first place". I will always be grateful for the care he took with her and am so sad to learn of his untimely death. My condolences to the family. They are in my thoughts and prayers.
