William Larkin Obituary

William John Larkin Jr. COLUMBIA - Dr. Bill Larkin went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Messiah Jesus, on the afternoon of February 18, 2014. He was born on August 12, 1945, in Donora, Pennsylvania, the first child of Dr. William J. Larkin, Sr., and Margaret C. Morgan Larkin. Growing up in western Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh) and Chicago as the eldest of five children (three brothers and one sister), Bill graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1963. While still in high school, Bill received his call from the Lord to full-time Christian service (Isaiah 6:8). In preparation to fulfill this calling, he attended Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL), graduating in 1967 with a BA in history. Bill completed his Bachelor's of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1970 and was ordained in the United Presbyterian Church, the denomination in which his father served for almost 60 years. During his time at Princeton, Bill studied under Bruce Metzger, whose close work with the Greek New Testament would challenge him to pursue doctoral studies. Following graduation from seminary, Bill married fellow Wheaton graduate, Edna Ruth Dennis, and they spent their first year of marriage serving in the Olney Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, with Bill working as assistant pastor to Rev. Fred Vogenitz. Between 1971 and 1975, Bill and Edna lived in Durham, England, where Bill studied under distinguished New Testament professor C.K. Barrett, while Edna taught history in a local grammar school. Bill worked tirelessly on his doctoral dissertation arguing that Luke's use of the Old Testament, especially the Servant song of Isaiah 53, demonstrated that Jesus's death was for the atonement of the sins of His people. This marked the beginning of Bill's lifelong work with the gospel of Luke and Luke's second volume, Acts. Disciplined study, careful research, depth of humility and kindness of spirit characterized the next 38 years, as he invested in thousands of lives, serving with distinction as Professor of New Testament and Greek at Columbia Biblical Seminary and Graduate School of Missions in Columbia, SC. His conviction that God speaks through His Word to all peoples in all times and cultures, calling them to bow the knee and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ, drove Bill's passion to teach others to read, understand, and live out the Scriptures (Acts 16:31). Students remember him as the professor who would sit with them at lunch and ask how they were really doing. He always had a word of encouragement and a sweet smile, even just in passing someone on the sidewalk. Bill was never too busy to help, and he took joy in every opportunity to serve. He held nothing back in his service, and his love for the Lord and His Word was contagious. Bill authored five books, of which three were commentaries on Acts, one was the exegetical method he had crafted and refined over the years, and the other dealt with culture and biblical hermeneutics. He co-edited a sixth book, translated the book of Acts for the New Living Translation, wrote numerous articles and reviews, and participated in three scholarly societies: the Evangelical Theological Society, Society of Biblical Literature, and the Institute for Biblical Research. Bill sought to teach the principles of Biblical exegesis from the original languages to help preachers and teachers accurately explain and apply the Scriptures. Not only did he love training people to serve Christ all over the world, but he also made the most of opportunities to teach in Europe, Asia, and Africa. His colleagues remember his devotion to their common mission to know Christ and make Him known and the joy he took in interacting with each of them in a collegial, mutually challenging and edifying way. Deeply committed to the ministry of the local church, Bill served as a teaching elder with the Palmetto Presbytery (Presbyterian Church in America) in several Columbia churches (Cornerstone, Eau Claire, and Northeast) and as an adult Christian education teacher with First Presbyterian Church (ARP) for many years. Following his retirement in June 2013, Bill was honored to become Emeritus Professor of New Testament and Greek with Columbia International University and Visiting Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Missions for Erskine Theological Seminary of Columbia. Though the invasion of pancreatic cancer meant he was not able to serve in those roles in the capacity he had hoped, he still directed an independent study and mentored students and faculty whenever he had a good day in between chemo and radiation treatments. As he and his wife walked down this road, the most difficult of his life, he demonstrated strength, dignity, and grace. He took every opportunity to share his hope in Jesus with everyone he met, even the EMTs taking care of him in an ambulance between Columbia and Charleston. His family is grateful to medical professionals both at MUSC (Dr. Steve Chin, Dr. Richard Adams, Dr. Graham Warren) and in Columbia (Dr. Georges Postic, Dr. Siri Siri) for their kindness and for the time and quality of life gained through their treatments. Bill fought hard, and his final decline was unexpectedly rapid, but through it all he never wavered. This trial more than anything else revealed his true character of humble, quiet faith, resting in Jesus's arms, and doing his utmost to serve those around him. His wife, two children--Thomas Larkin (Rachel) and Priscilla Larkin Harris (Trevor), two grandsons (Benjamin and Daniel Larkin), mother, four siblings, in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, and other extended family members thank you for your condolences, prayers and for your countless demonstrations of love for Bill throughout this trial. The memorial service for Dr. Larkin will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, Feb. 22, at First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, with family visitation to follow in the Jackson Hall. Private Entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park will precede the service. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to Columbia International University, PO Box 3122, Columbia, SC 29230-3122, World Witness, 1 Cleveland St, Ste 220, Greenville, SC 29601, or to Erskine Theological Seminary, PO Box 338, Due West, SC 29639. I lovec my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Larkin. He was always available to assist me whenever I called to asked him if I was on track with a particular text of Scripture that I was working on for a weekly Sermon. He was one of the most authentic and kind Men that I have had the privilege of knowing. May God continue to bless the fruit of his work, and may the loving memories of Dr. Larkin continue to live on.

I grieved for the passing away of Dr. Larkin because of the personal contact I had with him since my days in CIU (1994-1998) till now. I am currently teaching in a seminary in Taiwan and at the same time writing my doctoral dissertation (Stellenbosch University in South Africa). One month before Dr. Larkin passed away, I corresponded with him about chapter 4 in my dissertation and received comment and help from him about the direction of my thought in this chapter. In my Trinity dissertation which did not get to be approved, I dedicated my dissertation to Dr. Larkin. I have been thinking that when I finish my doctoral dissertation for the school in South Africa, I will dedicate the work to Dr. Larkin. But with the passing away of Dr. Larkin, I wondered the meaning of this future act of me. I have never experienced the passing away of a loved one. But with the death of Dr. Larkin, for the first time in my life I felt loss and pain; now I realize how painful it is when you miss someone very dearly. I had told Dr. Larkin before in an e-mail that I am passing on his legacy here in my school through my teaching. I think that for the rest of my life I will miss Dr. Larkin and thank him for his life impact and model in my life. I think that I will continue working on my dissertation in the limited amount of the time I had and finished my doctorate. I know that Dr. Larkin would love and be happy to see me complete my doctorate even though it is too bad that I cannot e-mail him anymore about this wonderful news in the future. I will (and must) carry on his legacy in my teaching and writing! May God comfort and strengthen Dr. Larkin's wife and two children. I have been praying for you and will continue doing so.

Dr.  Larkin taught Acts-Revelation and would often translate directly from the Koine Greek when reading Scripture.  He had a passion for contextualizing the Gospel for the peoples of the world.  I also had the privilege of teaching alongside his wife for 2 years at Ben Lippen High School.

I have always remembered Dr. Larkin beginning the initial class in Romans by reading and expounding the last chapter of the book! In it Paul lists numerous individuals dear to his heart. It was quite natural for the professor to identify with the apostle, for he too loved individuals. In Ezra 7:10 I see "Dr. Bill Larkin" written boldly. I cherish my copy of his commentary on Acts.

Dr Larkin was probably the most humble, sweet ,and caring man I have met. He never failed to ask how my boys an I were doing. What an honor to have known him,his wife Edna and both his children!

Dr. Larkin was a man who took his faith and calling seriously and one who was disciplined in all he did.

He studied to know God's Truths more fully, to live them out more richly, to be able to share them more thoroughly. When I first came to CIU in 1994, I remember how he reminded all the new students to “fit their tasks or assignments to a block of time”. He modeled discipline. Further, he was a deep thinker but wise in how to make the truth practical.

He helped me develop in the area of study so that I too might become like him, “a workman that need not to be ashamed, but one who rightly divides the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15)”.

Dr. Larkin was a humble and approachable man. He was an awesome role model and will be dearly missed. It is comforting to know though, that his legacy will be lived out & multiplied all around the world in the lives of those students he so profoundly impacted!

I was a lonely highchool dropout who found myself in college where I met this wonderful man. He never taught me at all, but he never failed to ask how I was doing. He honored me as an individual, and I have a sneaky suspicion he saw me through the eyes of heaven. In a very real way that man showed me the love we so seldom show one another. May God give me the same ability to love others like he did those of us at school who had nothing like me.

I remember Dr. Larkin's kind smile and greetings, even though I was an undergrad, and had no classes with him. He ran the race well to the end. May the Lord comfort his family with the great hope we have in Christ!

I had Dr. Larkin in 1983-1985 at CIU in NT and Greek and Ethics class. He was a godly example and great teacher and always worked hard to helping people understanding questions; he never seemed to mind spending time to help. He remembered people by name and face. I am sad to read about this today of his passing. Dr. Larkin also had a great passion for missions - character, godliness, love of Greek, sound theology, and missions - a godly example of a Biblical professor in a seminary! With both him and Dr. Hulbert passing away so close to each other, seems like an era has passed for Columbia International University, Columbia, SC. Sincerely in Christ, Ken Temple

I have always been amazed that Dr. Larkin remembered me and my husband. How he remembered and cared for all of us. Seeing him off and on over the years, he never failed to ask personal questions that indicated his awareness of our life and our history. Always he has drawn me closer to the One who knows the number of hairs on my head. I am so grateful for his life among us as he followed our Lord.

So sorry to hear the news of the passing on of one of the greatest brains to have served at CIU. His impact was felt far and wide even on the african continent. He visited Evangelical Bible College in Zimbabwe many years ago with Dr Steyne and became my lecturer at CBS. He made me to love the book of Acts by the way he taught us. As C.H. Spurgeon once said," Carve your name on hearts and not on marble." This Dr Larkin distinguished himself well!

Dr. Larkin was such a brilliant humble man. I am grateful for his guidance that he so graciously gave me even though I was never enrolled in one of his courses. as a result of his guidance I was able to imitate Christ more in my ministerial duties, and for that I am deeply grateful.

Dr. Larkin will always hold a very special place in my heart. He was my Advisor, mentor, friend, and an extraordinary example of what it truly means to have a real relationship with Jesus! Just before graduation, Dr. Larkin so wisely shared 2 Cor 12:9 with me which brought tears of joy to me then and even now. Much love to his family and all who loved him! Blessings!

Dr. Larkin: Someone, who in a matter of 15 months class time, impacted my life enough, to initiate our current ministry from his sensitivity for people and his passion for the Word, Acts 17:26-27.

My first in depth conversation with Dr. Bill Larkin was at the Lausanne II congress in Manila. I spoke to him about some issues related to cross-cultural communications and what I believed about the nature of the Scriptures that I was unable to resolve. He told me that he had written a book on the subject of my concerns. While in Manila, I purchased a copy of Bill Larkin's book, Culture and Biblical Hermeneutics and began reading it on the long trip back to the States. Larkin summarized Lloyd Kwast's position on the impact of culture on theology. Dr. Kwast, a professor of intercultural studies at the graduate school of Biola University, happened to be my seatmate on the return flight. This subject had a deep interest to me. Bill Larkin reviewed the positions taken by leading evangelical scholars on how culture impacts theology. For years, I was fascinated by my observations of how culture impacts epistemology and hermeneutics, and consequently, beliefs of the churches in a particular culture. What a wonderful opportunity to learn from top thinkers on this important and interesting subject. The seatmate on my other side joined our conversation. He was also a scholar who taught Bible translators for Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL. He pointed out how valuable Larkin's insights are as applied to Bible translation and how he used this book in his classes. Since moving to Columbia, SC, some 20 years ago I have had the privilege of being blessed by every contact I had with God's very humble but great scholar Bill Larkin.

I have several fond memories of Dr Larkin during my time at Columbia International University. After the first day of class I went to ask a question and he picked up his bible and was reading a verse to me when I looked down I saw he was reading a Greek Bible... as if it was in English and I knew then and there that I was going to learn so much from this man. He desired us not to be "minimalist" and just learn what we needed to get an "A" on a test but to really interact with Scripture and allow it to train and transform you. Not only was Dr. Larkin brilliant (and I don't say that lightly) but was a man full of compassion and humility. I regret I didn't tell him my high regard of him while here on earth but know the praise he is experiencing right now is far greater than I could ever express!

My heart is sad, but my spirit rejoices in knowing Dr. Larkin is with our beloved Savior. Dr. Larkin always amazed me with his humility and genuine concern for students!
Regardless of the function, he was there.

Dr. Larkin attended my ministry ordination in 2009, and offered words of wisdom. His words I appreciate more as I grow in the Word and in my ministry. "Keep the Bible first in your ministry." Simple but powerful!

To everyone who knew Dr. Larkin, we are so blessed to have shared in his life. We are so blessed to cherish his legacy! May we find comfort and peace as we share his legacy with others, especially those who didn't know him!

Dr. Larkin had the unique combination of great humility, great intellect, a witty sense of humor and a love for God and all people. His example, classes, times in between to talk and chapels had a profound impact on me during my time at CIU. If we miss him, I can only imagine how much more his family. Our prayers are with you, dear friends.

I was a student of Dr. Larkin's in the 90's. On one occasion my 3 year old daughter accompanied me to class. Dr. Larkin acknowledged her, treating her as if she was the most important person present. Dr. Larkin was a dear, godly, servant of our Lord. He will be missed.

I had the privilege to attend the old Columbia Bible College & Seminary and was there when it was changed to CIU.

Dr. William J. Larkin was a dear friend, mentor, and my professor...though I never ever took a class with him. I had something more unique: I had his home phone number, and I called him relentlessly whenever I needed to know something theologically or doctrinally.

Also, when I was preparing to preach, I would sometimes call to get his take on my conclusions, and many times he would simply say, "Wayne, I think you're on the right track in your thinking about this passage", and other times he would get his Bible and read the text in the original language and explain it.

I will miss him tremendously! May God bless the fruit of his labor, and may God bless his dear wife and their family.

Bill Larkin was not only my colleague at CIU, he was my teacher at the Seminary, where he taught Romans like he was the Apostle Paul. My life and my love for the Word of God were forever changed. Thank God for this life well lived.

I was saddened to read of Dr. Larkin's cancer and passing in this morning's paper. I will always remember him as a faithful member and one of our SS teachers at McGregor Presbyterian in the 1970's, carrying around and reading from his Greek NT, translating as he read. There is no way to exaggerate his faithfulness to Christ or his kindness, pleasant demeanor, and helpfulness.
