Angela Patricia Barrington Holladay COLUMBIA - Angela Barrington Holladay, 85, died peacefully at her residence on Monday, November 25, 2013. Angela was born in Manhattan, NY, May 20, 1928. Her parents were John Clyde and Ruby Honeycutt Barrington, natives of North Carolina. When she was in the 6th grade, her family moved to Staten Island, NY. They lived there until her high school years when her parents moved to Summerville, SC, and later to Dillon, SC, where they would permanently reside. At the age of 16, Angela entered the University of South Carolina where she majored in political science. She graduated with honors and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, she completed a year of graduate school at the University of North Carolina. While at USC, she met and later married Carroll "CG" Holladay. The story fondly remembered by the family is that Carroll saw Angela reading a book on the USC Horseshoe, and stated, "That's the girl I am going to marry." Angela and Carroll had been married 59 years at the time of Carroll's death in 2011. Angela was a schoolteacher for a number of years. While raising a family of five children, she also served as the office manager and bookkeeper for Holladay, Coleman and Associates until Carroll's retirement in 2009. Her many interests included reading, music, gardening and bird watching. She was especially fond of opera. In the 1960s she was a co-founder of the Columbia Ski Club and spent many enjoyable times snow skiing with family and friends in both the N.C. Mountains, as well as Crested Butte, CO. She was a longtime member of Shandon Presbyterian Church and enjoyed playing in the hand bell choir. The greatest love in her life was spending time with Carroll, her children and grandchildren at Lake Murray and Topsail Beach. Angela loved sitting on the dock with her beloved husband, watching sunsets over Topsail Bay, as all the birds made their way down the sound to roost for the evening. Angela was predeceased by Carroll in June 2011. She is survived by her children, their spouses and grandchildren: Glenn and Sandy Holladay of Charlotte, and their sons, Ryan (wife, Jenn) and Brett; David and Kitty Holladay of Columbia, and their sons, David and Justin; Deborah Holladay of Lexington; Craig Holladay of Raleigh, and sons, Cody and Layton; and Steven and Elizabeth Holladay of Irmo, and their children, Taylor and Nicholas. She is also survived by her sisters: Marjorie Pace of Woodruff, SC, and Cynthia Harris of Topsail Beach, NC. She was predeceased by her sister, Jeanette Braddy of Dillon, SC. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, in the home at 602 Sallie Baxter Drive in Columbia. A private memorial service for the family will be held at the home after the visitation. At a later time, Angela will go to her final resting place at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church outside of Raleigh. She will rest there with Carroll, her parents, and her maternal grandparents. The family would like to thank Angela's physician, Dr. Kim Meadows, and her nurse, Sarah Chappell, for their concern and care. The family is indebted to and blessed to have had Lori German and Eunice Haynes for their compassionate in-home care. They were a great source of comfort to Angela and the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Project HOPE Foundation, an organization serving children, youth, and young adults with autism in Upstate SC, PMB 358, Suite 2100, Woodruff Road, Greenville, SC, 29607. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
