Sgt. 1st Class Dewey W. Corder U.S. Army (Ret.) PELION Funeral service for Sgt. 1st Class Dewey W. Corder, U.S. Army, (Ret.), 65, of Pelion, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073. Rev. Jerry Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at the funeral home. Dewey passed away at home on Monday, February 17, 2014, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who loved his family unconditionally and will be greatly missed. A highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, he served two combat tours and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also served during Operation Desert Storm. A life member of the Lake Murray VFW Post #6740, he was also a member of the American Legion. The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Madden with Lexington Oncology, Dr. Joshua Lawson with Lexington Radiology and Compassionate Care Hospice Staff for their attentive care. Surviving are his loving wife of 31 wonderful years, Janet Corder of Pelion; son, Chris Williams of Batesburg; daughter, Michelle Francis (Eric) of West Columbia; five grandchildren, Grace Williams, Nathanael Williams, Kali Francis, Faith Williams and Skyler Francis; sister, LaVerne Coleman of West Columbia; brother, James L. Corder, Jr. (Harriette) of Lexington and Talmadge E. "Gene" Medlin (Susie) of Lexington; aunt, Lila Mae Lee (Ernest) of Pelion. He was preceded in death by father, James Luther Corder, Sr.; mother, Lila Estelle Strickland Corder and Julie Louise Corder; brother, Donald T. Wingard; and uncle, Henry "Buck" Corder.
