Capt. Donald E. Vining WEST COLUMBIA Funeral service for Capt. Donald E. Vining, 72, of West Columbia, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia Chapel, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. Capt. Vining passed away on Thursday, April 17th, 2014. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Robert Leonard Vining and Clisher "Tiny" Hutto Vining. He was a graduate of Lower Richland High School in 1959. Upon graduation, he joined the S.C. Air National Guard 169th Fighter Squadron and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force through the Berlin crisis. Captain Vining's love of flying continued throughout his life and career. He was a distinguished pilot with Piedmont Airlines, earning the top honor of Pilot and Captain of the Year awards. He achieved numerous pilot instructor certifications and awards, while holding offices within the airline industry. Capt. Vining, aka "Flicker" retired from U.S. Airlines and continued his passion of aviation into his retirement. Surviving are his son, Scott Vining (Tiffany) of Lexington; grandchildren, Jacob S.
