The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2013, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Professor Hansen passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013. Born in Chicago, IL, he was a son of the late Harold M. and Florence M. O'Connell Hansen. Professor Hansen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a 1964 graduate of the University of Illinois and completed his MFA at the University of Michigan in 1966. A well-known regional artist, he taught at the University of South Carolina in the Department of Art for 33 years. A much loved teacher, his words are still carried on by former students in their classrooms. His works include watercolor landscapes and abstract works in both encaustic and watercolor. Professor Hansen loved spending time at his cottage on Lake Murray where he enjoyed fly fishing and looking for arrowheads. It was the beauty of the lake and the landscape that inspired him to explore watercolor at a professional level. Another of his passions was playing squash with all of his fellow squash players. He has paintings at The McKissick Museum on the USC campus and numerous paintings held in private and public collections. He was the recipient of nearly 50 art awards and had been represented in nearly 150 group and one-man exhibitions. He was a longstanding member of the SC Watermedia Society and guest curated a watercolor exhibition at the SC State Museum and another at the Columbia Museum of Art. Most recently, in 2012, three of his works were included in the Abstract Art of South Carolina 1949-2012 exhibition at the SC State Museum. Throughout his career, he was frequently asked to judge numerous art exhibits around the state and lead painting workshops. Professor Hansen developed Vascular Dementia during his late 50's that precipitated an early retirement as well as a five-year creative hiatus. With the continual offering of creative opportunities, he came back to his vast knowledge of art and design, creating hundreds of new drawings and paintings some of which can be viewed at www.hansenpaintings.com and www.facebook.com/ImmutablePassion. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Martha Dianne "Dee" Hansen; son, Daniel "Danny" Charles Hansen (Sherry); daughter, Susan Elizabeth Hansen Staves; grandchildren, Kendall, Kaellan, Kelley and Kerrie Hansen. He is also survived by a brother, Daniel Owen Hansen; and sister, Nancy Ann Gordon. Memorials may be made to the SC
