Hugh Francis Fenzel, Sr. COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian burial for Hugh Francis Fenzel, Sr., 96, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in First Presbyterian churchyard. The Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following until 7 p.m. Mr. Fenzel died Friday, August 8, 2014. Born in Fort Williams, Maine, he was a son of the late Alfred R. Fenzel and Hanna E. Napier Fenzel. He attended St. Johns University and was a founding member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his service in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his retirement from active duty he served for many years in the Army Reserves Civil Affairs unit from which he retired as commander in 1972. Inspired by the needs of his own son, Buddy, he pioneered the development of services for those with special needs in South Carolina and became a member of the Richland-Lexington Mental Retardation Board. Mr. Fenzel was a member of the Reserve Officers Association of S.C., Executive Director Emeritus of the Executive Association of Greater Columbia, and a life member of the American Legion Post #6 Columbia, SC. Surviving are his daughter, Frances F. Goodrich (Ed) of Columbia; grandchildren, Dell Goodrich, Rebecca G. Seezen (Michael), Elizabeth G. Comer (Ryan), and Charles E. Goodrich all of Columbia; great-grandchildren, James, Marshall and Jack Seezen and Eliza Comer; brother, Alfred J. Fenzel of East Chester, N.Y.; sister, Catherine V. Gibbs of Silver Spring, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Miriam Marshall Fenzel; son, Hugh F. "Buddy" Fenzel, Jr; and sister, Mary F. Kelly.
