Samuel Curtis Drake COLUMBIA - A Memorial Mass for Samuel Curtis Drake, 68, will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be in the church rose garden. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Curtis died Thursday, April 17, 2014, after a brave and lengthy battle against lung cancer. His dignity and grace in the face of adversity was truly inspirational. Curtis was the son of the late Louis N. Drake, Sr. and the late Margaret J. Drake. He graduated from AC Flora High School in 1963. He served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves for six years reaching the rank of Sergeant. He was the owner and operator of Drake Systems, Inc. Mr. Drake was a Trenholm Little League baseball coach for many years and was active in many charities for Muscular Dystrophy. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Columbia M.S. Society and organized the Roman Gabriel Celebrity Golf Tournament featuring many local and national celebrities. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Curtis was especially fond of the water and spent many happy years on Lake Murray with his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Helen McDougall Drake; sons, John Charles Drake (Hyatt), Robert Jamison Drake, Thomas Hayes Drake (Elizabeth); grandsons, Samuel Gray Drake, Benjamin Boyd Drake, Coleman Hayes Drake; many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Betty Collins McDougall; and his faithful canine companion, Beau. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Louis N. Drake Jr. and John J. Drake. The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to the doctors and staff of the South Carolina Oncology Associates for their compassionate care of Curtis during his illness.
