George Parsons Obituary

COLUMBIA Dr. George Sterling Parsons died on December 25, 2011 at the age of 70 after a courageous 3 year battle with multiple myeloma. George died at home with family at his bedside. He was the only son of Velma Boulware Parsons Hair and the late Sterling George Parsons.
George was born in Georgetown, SC and raised in Columbia, SC. A USC graduate, he completed his dental education at the Medical College of Virginia in 1967. He was on the dental faculties at the Medical University of SC and the University of Florida. After completing his certificate at the Medical College of Georgia in 1977 he practiced as an endodontist in West Columbia, SC until his retirement in 2005. An avid hunter, fisherman, and gun collector he purchased Barron's Outfitters with his son in 1998 and continued his involvement with the business until his death. He loved the time he spent with Kent at Barron's.
A navy veteran, Dr. Parsons served in the Dental Corp in DaNang, Vietnam and continued service to his country in the Naval Reserve. He was a member of numerous organizations and groups including the American Dental Association, South Carolina Dental Association, American Endodontists Association, and was a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. He was a member of Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity and founded the SC Graduate Chapter.
Later in life he developed a passion for motorcycling, traveling across the country to find the perfect "road side diner". He loved to plan "guy trips" for friends who learned to appreciate the challenge of following his strict itinerary and listening to his conservative political views.
Dr. Parsons is survived by his mother, wife, Mary Ann, daughter, Nicole Harwell (John) and grandsons Blake and Andrew of Denver, CO; son, Kent (Shannon) and grandsons Sterling, Campbell, Graham, and Jennings of West Columbia, SC all of whom provided much love and joy in his life.
The family expresses gratitude to Dr. Ann Hutchison, Dr. Trip Jones, and Tammy Cooper, RN of the SC Oncology Associates for their compassionate care of George.
The family will receive friends and family from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, December 29th at Shives Funeral Home. A private service will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Mary Ann, Kent and Nicole, I am so sorry to learn of George's death. I was just today recalling my summers working for George, mostly to provide a sounding board for political conversation than to help with his practice! And I remember babysitting Kent and Nicole when we lived next door at the Heritage--hard to imagine ya'll all grown with kids of your own! I will keep you all in my prayers and your husband/Dad always in my memories. with love, Lucia Rawls Schoelwer

Kent and Parsons family,
Not sure if you knew or remembered this but in high school I had aspirations of going into dentistry. I interviewed Dr. Parsons for a class project and he really took the time to help me with the project. After the "interview", the conversation quickly moved to his love of the outdoors and hunting. I know that he would be smiling now as I am sitting in the deer stand with my son - something we just started doing with the help of Kent. He was a great man with a great family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Mary Ann and Family-Rallie and I are holding you close in our thoughts and prayers. George was such an interesting and congenial man. We always enjoyed our conversations with him. May you find comfort in the wonderful family memories and joy in the celebration of a life well lived. Sending caring regards, Ruth and Rallie

Dear Kent, Nicole and Mary Ann,
We were so sorry to learn of the loss of Doctor George. He was always quick with a smile, big hugs, and made us always feel special when our family visited Barron's.
We will always be grateful to both your Dad and you for carrying on the tradition of supplying the most avid sportsmen in Columbia with great products and wonderful service. He will surly be missed by so many loyal friends. Please know that all of the Kinders' thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

I am saddened as well to hear of Dr. Parsons' passing. He and I hunted together on several occasions at our clubs in Hampton Cty. and Jasper Cty. I am glad to have known him and thankful that we shared some time together doing what we enjoyed. I had no idea that he was ill. May you be comforted in your time of loss.

Kent and family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am Henry Plowden's daughter from Charleston and I just heard. Dr Parson's contacted my Dad when my mother passed away in November. I understand the pain you are going through and I am thinking of you and your family during this time.

Dear MaryAnne, Please accept my condolences to your family for the loss of your beloved George. I have known George almost since I began practice in 1974, and enjoyed him! We would refer, converse and share dentistry and dental association topics frequently. I think I appreciated George's sense of humor and his "rascally" attitude the best! Many of us in dentistry will feel the loss of a comrade. Sincerely, Phil Smith

Mary Ann,
We are saddened to hear of the death of our friend George. We have such fond memories of our high school days together and having him as a groomsman in our wedding almost 50 years ago. It was so good to visit with both of you at the reunion a couple of years ago when we first learned of his illness. We hold you in our hearts and prayers.
Love,
Mary and Charlie

George was my "boss" when I first left active duty and joined the Navy Reserves. Yes, I will always remember those strict conservative conversations. I considered him a mentor in many ways and was so glad to talk to him in Dec of 2010. My sincerest sympathies to Mary Ann, Nicole and Kent.
Most sincerely,
Pat Sullivan
