Jeannette Eleanor Whalen COLUMBIA - Memorial service for Jeannette Eleanor Whalen, 92, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Ridgeway. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Whalen died Saturday, July 6, 2013. Born June 24, 1921, in Rochester, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Cecelia Rahm Haefele. She attended Courtland College in N.Y., majoring in physical education. At the age of 16, she won the greater Rochester tumbling championship. In addition, she was trained in tap dance and ballet. During the late 1940s, she was a driver and reporter for Stars and Stripes. She traveled extensively around the world and kept journals for over 50 years, chronicling her thoughts and memories. She wrote poetry for family and friends, some of it published. Her other hobbies included golf, bowling, reading and working crossword puzzles. She attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and served as past president of Columbia Antique Study Club. Surviving are her daughter, Donna Whalen Guess; grandchildren, William F. Guess II, Amy Christian Deremo, Nikki Christian Fink; and great-grandchild, Noah M. Fink. She was predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. Donald H. Whalen; daughter, Wendy Whalen Christian; and son-in-law, William F. Guess. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 307 Longtown Road, Ridgeway, SC 29130.
