Pearl Whitman WINNSBORO - Leila Pearl Harmon Whitman, 93, died in Winnsboro on Thursday, August 1. Born on March 2 1920, she was the daughter of Godfrey Leaphart Harmon and Maggie Roland Harmon and was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She was affectionately known to all as "Mama Pearl." Mama Pearl was predeceased by her husband George Cephus Whitman. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands: Brenda and Jerry Davenport of Spartanburg, Norma and Eddie Branham of Winnsboro, and Cathy and Joe Spires of Garden City. Her grandchildren are Amy Herd, Whitney Stancil, George King, Leah Branham, Ashlee Pegg, and the Rev. Chris Spires. She is also survived by her nine great grandchildren: Arina Herd, Jessica and Addison Stancil, Morgan Rast, Maci Pearl King, Dalton Bryant, Michael and Morgan Pegg, and Henning and Whitman Spires. Her family was the center of Mama Pearl's life. Her faith, courage, and strength shaped their lives and continue as her legacy to them. As a faithful member of the Winnsboro Church of God, Mama Pearl taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir, and worked in the Ladies Ministry for over 60 years. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 3, at the First Church of the Nazarene, Winnsboro, SC, conducted by the Rev. Chris Spires. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the children's Sunday school class Mama Pearl formerly taught at the Winnsboro Church of God. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. A private burial will be conducted by the Rev. James White.
