Carl Smith COLUMBIA - On April 5, 2014, Carl Smith, of Columbia, laid down the working tools of life to go home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Carl was an active member of Hope Baptist Church for over 20 years, where he was a former Sunday School teacher and deacon. He retired from the Army after 20 years of service at Fort Jackson, including a tour in Vietnam in 1968-69 with the 5/7 1st Cav Bravo Company where he earned two Bronze Stars (1 with the V-device) and two Purple Hearts. Carl was also an active member of Dentsville Masonic Lodge #398, Lugoff-Elgin Eastern Star Chapter #298, and the Jamil Shriners, where he was active with the Wheels and Roadrunners Units. He was predeceased by his parents, David Henry Smith and Grace Hanley Smith, and his brothers and sisters, Horace, Paul, Lora, Joe, Marie and Frank. Carl is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Debora May Smith, two sons, Jeremy, his wife Melissa, and Stuart, his wife Stephanie, and five grandchildren, Anthony, Joshua, Audrey, Tailor and Luke. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Hope Baptist Church, 2117 Clemson Road, Columba, with Rev. Trey Pruitt officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Kornegay & Moseley. Burial will follow the service in Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors.
