James Hamilton Bowers IRMO - Memorial service for James Hamilton Bowers, 77, will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Union United Methodist Church with visitation following the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family. Jim Bowers passed away Monday, June 16, 2014. Born in Estill, SC, he was the son of the late Marion Dewey Bowers and Ida Ruth Smith. He was a graduate of Richland Technical College. He served in the military with the U.S. Army. He had retired as a computer programmer analyst where he last worked for Richland School District 2. Jim was a member of Union United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. In 1975, he moved the family to Darmstadt, Germany, where he took a job as a programmer/analyst for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. This enabled his family to visit many beautiful places, such as the leaning tower of Pisa, the Swiss Alps and the French Riviera. Jim had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh. His favorite pastime was fishing. A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, he is survived by his wife, Coby Scott Alexander Bowers; daughter, Laren Elizabeth Bowers of Columbia; sons, James Rodney Bowers (Lynn) of Columbia, and Robert A. Bowers (Paula) of Saluda, SC.; nine grandchildren, Scott, Brad, Jay, Davis, Ellis, Sarah, Alex, Evelyn Grace and Paul; sisters, Nan Kilpatrick, Carolyn Hancock, Jean Warren and Peggy Heaton; numerous nieces and nephews.
