James Howell Sikes COLUMBIA - Funeral service for James Howell Sikes, 83, will be held Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Park Street Baptist Church, Columbia, with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Mr. Sikes passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013, after a courageous battle with kidney disease. Born September 20, 1930, in Cobbtown, GA, he was the son of the late Elsie and Archie Sikes. He was a graduate of Winnsboro High School and attended the University of South Carolina. After college, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War with an outstanding record. Mr. Sikes was a member of Park Street Baptist Church where he was a lifetime Deacon, past Sunday School teacher, past Deacon Chairman and served on numerous church committees. Jim Sikes was a successful man in every sense of the word through his faith in Christ, his family, public service and business. He is a true American success story who proved a person can obtain their dreams through hard work, even from the most humble beginnings. After starting in business in 1964, his deep and abiding faith in God sustained him in the building of Vendors Supply Co., Inc. Mr. Sikes was the recipient of the prestigious "Entrepreneur of the Year" award in 1996 and was chosen to go to Palm Springs, Calif. as a judge in 1997. He was a pioneer in the vending industry and was honored for his years of service by being named "Vendor of the Year" in 2001. Mr. Sikes leaves quite a legacy and will be missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Greta Nelms Sikes, of Columbia; daughter, Debbie Stokes (Ronnie); son, Randy Sikes (Kathy) all of Columbia; sisters, Maggie Shoaf and Betty Guinan, both of Columbia. Jim was a loving grandfather to five grandchildren, Breanne Sikes, Katie Sikes Hope (Lee), John Stokes, Jennifer Stokes, Bailey Corbin; and one great-grandchild, Emma Grace Hope. Mr. Sikes was predeceased by a son, Jaye D. Sikes (Fla). The family would like to thank all of the staff at the Lowman Home and Lutheran Hospice for their care and compassion during this time.
