John Helms Obituary

John N. "Johnny" Helms COLUMBIA John N. "Johnny" Helms musician, bandleader, educator died Friday, March 27, 2015. Born 2/10/35 to the late Mary Brown and William Edgar Helms Sr., he was predeceased by his brother, W.E. "Eddie' Helms Jr. and his nephew, W.E. "Ed" Helms III. He is survived by his sister, Mary Helms Counts; nephew, Michael Counts (Vicki); nieces, Karen "Lisa" Prentice (Kevin), Dinah H. Cook (Phil), son, James; and Pam B. Helms, and her daughter, Blake. As a youngster, he won the Horace Heidt Talent Show in Columbia, and as a 9th-grade student was invited to perform with the University of South Carolina Band. He attended St. Peter's Catholic School and Columbia High School, the University of South Carolina, was a Mason, former member of the Sertoma Club, Gamecock Club, and was a rabid follower of all sports Gamecock. His jazz style was influenced by Clifford Brown (famed jazz trumpeter) and his talent was admired by the best of musicians. Among others in his career, he performed with Chris Potter, Jim Ferguson, Cannonball Adderly, Tommy Newsom, Bill Watrous, Woody Herman, the Clark Terry Big Band, Bucky Pizzarelli, Phil Woods and Urbie Green. He performed at Spoleto in Charleston when the first jazz was introduced to that festival. He was one of the founders of Main Street Jazz where he and Veron Melonas combined great food with great jazz. Johnny brought in the talent and performed with many of the groups. For several years, his was the house band at the Pirates' Cove (night club in the Capital Cabana Motor Inn) where they backed up such eclectic acts as Joi Lansing and Henny Youngman. His band performed for weddings, at clubs, for shows, and Republican fund raisers all over South Carolina. As an educator, he was former band director at Pelion High School. In 2009, a former student influenced by him had an endowment established in his name at Clemson University which provides a Grant-in-Aid to trumpet players in the Clemson University Tiger Band with preferences going to Pelion High School graduates (Johnny Helms Endowed CUTBA Grant-in-Aid). A very private person, he spoke with his horn. His unique musical ability and personality made him a person not-to-be forgotten. His friends surely won't. Bebop and swing are alive and well in heaven with Clark Terry and Johnny taking fours. His body was donated to the USC School of Medicine. Special thanks to all at the Marion Suite of Palmetto Richland Heart Center who treated him with such care and kindness. Memorials may be made to Clemson Foundation, for Johnny Helms Endowed CUTBA Grant-in-Aid, P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633; or to St. Peter's Catholic School, 1035 Hampton St., Columbia, SC 29201; or to the Jazz Program, USC School of Music, 813 Assembly St., Columbia, SC 29208. Please earmark your memorial in his name. He was a quiet giver and we know he'd be honored.

I knew Johnny from a small boy. When Jesse Helms, Johnny's Uncle, was mayor of Greenville, S. C. where I now live, we spoke often of Johnny and his trumpet. I remember their blocking off Main street in front of the Epicurean Restaurant where Veron Melonas ran and had "jam" sessions. He played with big Bands who visited Ft. Jackson and they had sessions at my cousin, Doug Broome's drive Inn in Five points.

Johnny will be missed.

Johnny was a great friend to my late husband, Terry Cully and inlaws, Jackie and Bill Cully. They all loved music so much and I am sure they are having a great time making Heavenly music together. You will be missed by many, Johnny.

I have many great memories from being in the Pelion High School Band under Mr. Helms's direction...pep band at the basketball games, St Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah, freezing in Christmas parades, the first time we "marched" in a football game...he really hated that. Wonderful musician, great teacher.

Johnny had the most unique way of playing his instrument. He blew it so soft without that front edge that it sounded like a kiss. I would tell him and Eddie that Johnny would just kiss the notes, rather than blow them.

I knew he was in the hospital, but was told he did not want anyone to know, so no visitors. And don't even tell anyone! Or I would have gone.

Last night, as I walked to my car, I looked over to see if his car was there and he was back.....but he was not, as I learned today, that never would he be back. It was good knowing you Johnny. No one could kiss the notes like you. You were a very special one of a kind. Tell Eddie Hi! for me.

Our sincere condolences to all of Johnny's family. Unaware that he was in poor health, over the last few weeks we gathered many photos of Main Street Jazz to give to Johnny. There are some excellent large ones of Johnny. We would like to give the photos and other material to someone in his family. My wife Becky and I were on the Board and she, thru Wachovia Bank provided major funding (and lots of labor!) for the awesome festivals. As did everyone that knew him, we loved Johnny and will truly miss him. I can be reached here in Columbia @ 238-8403 or 790-1995. Bill, for Bill & Becky Fincher

Johnny was a big influence at Pelion. He provided a lot of guidance to band members and others during his tenure and made us strive to be our best. It is an honor, to have known him.

Johnny's small groups were very important in the development of many young jazz musicians over the years, including Chris Potter, Andy Watson, Hans Teuber, Teddy Linder, myself, and many others. I'm sure many others would share my belief that I was fortunate to be a part of this unofficial Jazz School of the South. I was also fortunate to call him my friend for 45 years. Rest in Peace, John Helms. You were one of a kind, and we'll miss you.

I was in the band at Pelion High School while he was director there. Fantastic trumpet player. Feel honored to have known him and had him as a teacher.

Loved his horn. I only wish I could have played it half as good as Johnny Helms. Gone but never forgotten.
