Rudolph Lightsey Obituary

Rudolph "Rudy" Owens Lightsey BLUFFTON - Rudolph "Rudy" Owens Lightsey, 70, died Thursday, September 15, 2016. Mr. Lightsey was a native of Fairfax, SC, and a son of the late Roy H. and Grace Evelyn Brant Lightsey and was a member of Mt. Arnon Baptist Church. He had retired from the S.C. Dept. of Education and had currently been employed at the Chatham County, GA, Dept. of Education. Rudy had a lifelong love for cars, he fueled this passion by building, racing, selling, trading and restoring them. He was also an avid golfer but, most of all, he loved his family. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at Mt. Arnon Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Catoe officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Greta L. McMahon (Patrick); Greta's mother, Nelia S. Cone; grandchildren, Morgan, Reagan and Brendan; two sisters, Carol L. Bennett (Donald) and Bonnie Lightsey; one aunt, Mary B. Reid; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Roy H. Lightsey, Jr. and Bobby "Puff" Lightsey. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday, September 19, 2016, at Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC 29810. Memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation marching for Morgan Palmetto Chapter, 1122 Lady Street, #1000, Columbia, SC 29201.

Rudy was one of the best with a 4 speed and fast race car. More importantly he was very patient with me as a high schooler impatient to go racing, and in guiding my racing future. God Speed Rudy and thank you for adventures.

I have had the wonderful pleasure of knowing Rudy for over 30 years and proud to call him my friend. He was a true friend that was unselfish with his kindness and support. He was a happy and fun loving guy that loved his golf, hot-rods, friends, work, and most importantly his family. For almost three decades, he has worked tirelessly to provide the students of South Carolina and most recently Savannah Ga, with the safest and most reliable school buses possible. Rudy my friend, you are missed deeply. I'm sure that you have the members of Heaven laughing as never before. RIP Rudy, I miss you buddy...

We are sorry for the loss of our friend and family member. Rudy will be remembered for his love of life. I was so glad to spend quality time with him in March. We discussed our funny story that made Rudy not love smoking. Many of you will remember this. To the immediate family my prayers go out to you on your loss but remember God makes no mistakes Rudy was needed elsewhere. Sorry medical issues will keep me from supporting you in person but my spirit will be with you
