Josephine Tompkins Obituary

Josephine Boyle Tompkins COLUMBIA - Josephine Boyle Tompkins, beloved and devoted mother, grandmother and friend, peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2017. Her outgoing and exuberant personality will be greatly missed by her family and her countless friends. Born in Columbia on September 3, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Josephine Augusta Knight and Charlie Roland Boyle, Sr. Josephine, "Phine" as she was known to many, was educated in Columbia's A.C. Moore elementary school, Hand Junior High School and graduated from Columbia High School. After graduation, she attended Converse College in Spartanburg, and then graduated with a B.S. in Arts and Sciences from the University of South Carolina in 1955. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority at USC and was also a little sister of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. After graduation, she embarked in the field of education. She taught at several elementary schools and concluded her teaching career at St. Joseph School in Columbia. After raising her four boys, she spent time as a bookkeeper for several businesses before landing at Southeastern Freight Lines where she served as a Customer Service representative in Revenue Accounting for 24 years. She was a long time member of Trinity Cathedral and was heavily involved with the Trinity Bazaar for many years serving as Treasurer. She was an active member of the Junior League of Columbia and served as a commissioner on the S.C. Arts Commission for two consecutive three year terms. She had a larger than life personality and was always the life of the party. She enjoyed playing cards, attending events at Workshop and Town Theater, spending time with friends and participating in the lives of her sons and her grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, Richard Sims Tompkins (Libby) of Columbia, Charles Boyle Tompkins of Greenville and Joseph Paulling Tompkins (Sally) of Charleston; her daughter-in-law, Myda Rogers Tompkins of Columbia; grandchildren, Richard Sims Tompkins, Jr., Margaret Paulling Tompkins, William Rush Tompkins, Marian Rogers Tompkins, Patrick Devereux Tompkins, Joseph Griffith Tompkins, Mary Josephine Tompkins, Lynn Marie Tompkins, Virginia May Tompkins, Charles Boyle Tompkins, Jr., and Elizabeth Shecut Tompkins; and seven nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her only sibling, Charlie Rowland Boyle, Jr., and her beloved son Linn S. "Jiggs" Tompkins, III. A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock on Friday, April 28, 2017 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC. The family will greet friends at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Sims Tompkins, 727 Spring Lake Road, Columbia, S.C. from 6 until 8 o'clock on Thursday evening, April 27, 2017. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Arts Foundation, 1026 Sumter Street, Suite 200, Columbia, SC 29201; or the charity of one's choosing.
