KING — Betty Bowersock Hurston-Sell, age 71 passed away Friday, May the 22nd at Village Care in King, NC after a long illness.
Betty was born to Dennis and Katie (White) Bowersock May 24, 1943 in Coal City, IN. She was the oldest of ten siblings; George (Anita), Ronnie (Betty), Ralph (Patty), Sharon (Lennie Arndell), Winona, Dennice (Sam Lindsay) Terry, Detra (Billy Wallace) and Carl. She attended school at Michigan Christian College and later earned her degree in psychology at High Point College. Betty met Scott Hurston in 1964 while working as the supervisor of the mail department at Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, TN. The couple married in 1965 and had one daughter in 1967. Betty later married Delbert Hobart Sell in 2002.
Betty worked most of her life as a legal secretary and retired from Womble, Carlysle, Sandridge & Rice, Winston-Salem, NC in 2000. She was a member of the South Fork Church of Christ in Winston-Salem, NC. Betty enjoyed sewing and quilting, reading, and researching and documenting the Bowersock/White family genealogy. She spent many years traveling to family reunions, tracking down distant relatives to learn about her ancestors and her family history. Betty never met a stranger, or a baby that didn't need a kiss. She adored her three grandsons and never missed an opportunity to talk to anyone who would listen about "her boys".
Betty is survived by her daughter, Julie Hurston (Michael Ernst), King, NC; her grandsons Stephen Tyler Mabe, Nokomis, FL, Matthew Gray Mabe (Felicia Vestal), Charleston, SC, and Caleb Scott Mabe, Greensboro, NC; step-granddaughter McKenzie Leigh Ernst, King, NC; one great-granddaughter, Vela Leigh Mabe and great-grandson Aiden James Tulbert, Winston-Salem, NC; brothers Ronnie (TN), Ralph (IN) and Terry (KY); sisters Sharon (TN), Dennice (KY) and Detra (KY) and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
She was preceded in death by both her parents, Dennis and Katie, husband Delbert, sister Winona and brothers Carl and George. A memorial service is planned for June 5, 2015 at the Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC at 2:00 pm officiated by Dr. Bill Hall of South Fork Church of Christ, where her ashes will interred with her husband Delbert. The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
