GERMANTON — Mr. James Robert Mendenhall, "Crane," 84, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at his home after a brief illness.
He was born April 26, 1929 in Stokes County to Charlie Vance and Maude Hayes Mendenhall. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all. He loved spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by all. He was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church. Mr. Mendenhall served his country proudly in the Korean War in the US Army and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 27 years of service, was an avid farmer, and loved sports.
A 2 p.m. funeral service was held on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Faith Baptist Church in Germanton with Brother Kenny Heath and Brother Jim Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Rupert Mendenhall and four sisters, Betty Louise Mendenhall, Stella Mendenhall Janovak, Margaret Mendenhall Boyles and Shirley Mendenhall Smith.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Pauline Melton Mendenhall of the home; three sons, Ronnie Mendenhall and wife Lindy of Germanton, Billy Mendenhall of Germanton and Mike Mendenhall of the home; five grandchildren, Erica Goodwin and husband Chris, Kyle Mendenhall, Josh Mendenhall, Charlie Mendenhall and Richard Mendenhall; two step grandchildren, Matt Willard and wife Tosha and Jordan Stevens; one great grandson, Hollis Goodwin; two step great grandchildren, Bailey and Brody Willard and one sister, Mary Hayes Mendenhall Perrell.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 pm, Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home.
