Smith, Edward - Alton  
ALTON -Edward Smith of Alton departed this life on Friday, July 17, 2015, at Alton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Edward was born on August 2, 1932, in Grenada, Ms. to the late Julius and Georgetta (Caffey) Smith. He was the youngest of seven children, Edward was educated and graduated from high school in Earle, Arkansas. He moved to Alton with his family and was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served two years during the Korean War. In 1978, he married Dorothy Williams Smith and she preceded him in death in August 1995. They had one son, Gary Leon. Ed worked for over 30 years for American Smelting and retired there and began employment with Madison County Transit, retiring in 2012. Ed is known throughout the mid-west for his bowling skills. He mentored many young men in bowling. He was a lifetime member of the David Connors Bowling League and an active member of 100 Black Men of Alton. Ed is survived by his son, Gary Leon; and two sisters, Willie B.Brooks and Julie Powell. Four brothers, Walter, John M, Octavia and Thomas Green, preceded him in death. Visitation is 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. funeral services on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at True Church House of Prayer, 1414 Pearl Street, Alton., Ill. Burial will take place at Upper Alton Cemetery with full Military Honors Cathy Williams & Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements

Weirich, Lela - Jerseyville  
JERSEYVILLE- Lela Mae Weirich, 77, died at 2:56 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Jerseyville on Nov. 30, 1937, one of four children born to the late Delbert Wilson and Edith Marie (Thiel) Scoggins. Lela attended Jerseyville schools, and was employed as a counselor as well as a clerk at Owens-Illinois Glass in Alton retiring after 28 years when the plant closed. She married William Joseph Weirich on Jan. 26, 1974, in Jerseyville, and together the two have been blessed with 41 years together. Surviving are her husband, William Weirich of Jerseyville; a daughter, Melody Manning of Jerseyville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Monty and Stacey Manning of Fieldon, and Barry Manning of Jerseyville; four step children and their spouses, William and Andrea Weirich of Godfrey, Cindy and Rick Eggebrecht of Rosewood Heights, Debbie and Jack Farris of Godfrey, and Jeffrey Weirich of Godfrey; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Harvey Scoggins of Godfrey, and David and Teresa Scoggins of Holiday Shores. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Christopher Manning; a granddaughter, Robin Miller; a sister, Ellen Stemmler; and a sister-in-law, Treva Scoggins. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Thursday July 30, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Scott Kallal officiating. Burial will be in the Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Altar Society or to St. Jude's Hospital.
