COTTAGE HILLS — Gwenlyn "Gwen" J. Powell, 74, went to be with her Heavenly Father at 5:10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at St. Anthony's Health Care in Alton.

She was born on Dec. 29, 1939, in Alton, the daughter of Oliver and Bernice (Unverzogt) Dustman.

She married Lloyd Powell on June 7, 1955. He preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1986.

Gwen was a waitress at Sunray Café in Cottage Hills and Dick and Barbs, now Ned's Place, in Bethalto. She was a member of the Cottage Hills Baptist Church. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, playing gin rummy with her friend, Kaye, and most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Randy and Ethel Powell of Lincoln, Texas, Terri and Mike Elledge of Cottage Hills and Brad and Renee Powell of Stafford, Va.; six grandchildren, Alana, Kim, Kerrie, Chris, Janette and Ashley; fourteen great-grandchildren, Alley, Patton, Dillion, Bentley, Kaylee, Kayla, Tyler, Christina, Joshua, Gage, Gavin, Kendall, John and Chase; a sister and her husband, Golda and Fred Schuett of Ontario, Ore., and her best friends, Kaye Heaton of Fosterburg and Glenda Sparrowk of Bethalto.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Powell, a brother, Larry Dustman, and a stepbrother, Roy Roberts.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until services at noon Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Clyde Myers officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to for breast cancer research.
