Thomas Garrett Sr.


Thomas E. Garrett Sr., 76, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 15, 2014, at his home in Godfrey.

He was born Dec. 18, 1937, in Alton, the son of the late Calvin and Emma (Bennington) Garrett.

He was a towboat pilot with Norman Brothers until he retired after 35 years of service.He was an avid golfer with two holes in one at his favorite golf course Rolling Hills. He was also a frequent visitor of the Alton Belle Casino. He had a really great sense of humor and was loved by all. He loved his trees and doing yard wor, along with tinkering.

On Nov. 15, 1977, in Godfrey, he married Donna Hefley and she survives. Surviving are 10 children, Spencer Garrett (Julie), Woody Garrett, Taffy Ditzenberger ( Duane), Tommy Garrett, Jack Garrett (Gail), Donny Garrett (Shelly), Dawn McCane (Billy), Shelly McLaughlin (Mike), Danny Coon (Tami), Tiffany Lane; 31 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Woody Garrett (Amy), Paul Garrett (Gail), Frank Garrett (Jackie) and Calvin Garrett (Jean), four sisters, Pauline Henderson, Mary Schipkowski (Fred), Sarah Coleman (Joe) and Louise Higginbotham (Ernie); a daughter-in-law, Tim "Tamara" Garrett; and two sisters-in-law, Darlene Stilwell, Beverly Rutherford (Charles).

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ray "Beaver" and Steve Garrett, a grandson, Paul Garrett, two brothers, Henry M. Garrett and Orville L. Garrett, one infant brother and two infant sisters.

A special thank you to Heartland Enriching Life and especially to Patrick Joyce, who gave Tom very good care, including Dr. Mark Woodson and The Infusion Center.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, until time of service at 1 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. The Rev. Don E. Long Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park with full military honors by VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be given to the or Heartland Hospice.
