ALTON — Walter H. Sale, 91, passed away at 12:25 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 2014, at St. Clare Hospital in Alton.
He was born in St. Louis on Jan. 17, 1923, and was the son of the late Walter S. and Theresa (Holwick) Sale.
He married Reba Inez Powers in April 1945 in Kermit, Texas. She preceded him in death.
Walter was the head metallurgical engineer for Batchelder-Blasius Inc. in South Carolina, where he retired in 1983. He also was head metallurgist at American Smelting in Alton for many years, after graduating from the Rolla School of Mines. He also served in the Army Air Corp as a B17 Navigator and flew 33 missions in Europe. Walter attended the Godfrey Methodist Church. He was a master bridge player and was also a bridge instructor.
He is survived by his companion, Jean Grames; one son, Jerry (Linda) Sale of St. John, Mo.; one daughter, Melodie (Dale) Powers of California; two grandchildren, Tomi (Gentry) Russell of Loma Linda, Calif., and Brian (Nikki) Crawford of Wood River; three great-randchildren, Ashley, Jaxson and Parker Crawford; along with one brother, Jack Sale of St. Louis.
Visitation will be from 5:30 until time of memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Elias, Kallal, & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
