WOOD RIVER - On August 2, 2014, our beloved sister, aunt, and great aunt, Mildred (Saya) Stanich, went to join her family in heaven. She was 84 years young and passed after a long battle with dementia.

She was born to Agnes (Valvoda) and George J. Stanich Sr. on Sept. 12, 1929, in Wood River.

Our loved one never knew a stranger and saw the good in everyone. She lived life to its fullest by enjoying every day of her 47 years working with, as she would say "The best people to work with" at the Olin plant in East Alton until her retirement in 1995. In the early 1950's she was chosen for the Miss Olin Queen's court.

Athletics played a big part of her life. She was quite the athlete. She played softball for the Wood River Royals woman's league as a catcher until the age of 42. Even though she was a small woman not many could get past her to cross home plate.

Bowling was her life as well. She would carry a 175 average and never bragged about her game only bragged about her team mates and how well they bowled. Bingo and playing cards became her passion in her later years.

Her home was always open to family and friends. Our family will miss her deep laugh and the words, "want some coffee" when you sat down at the kitchen table. When leaving she would always walk you to the door and say, "Come back", See you later alligator".

She is survived by a brother, George M. Stanich and sister-in-law, Vera Stanich of Wood River; a sister, Evelyn (Babe) Freezeland of Roxana; her nieces and nephews, George J. Stanich and wife, Marlene of East Alton; Veronice (Ronie) Galletta and her husband, Roland of Holiday Shores; Diana Jones and her husband, Gerry of Holiday Shores, and Lance Freezeland and his wife, Michelle of Altamont; great niece, Kimberly Jamieson and her husband, Roger; great nephews, Steve Stanich, Chris Galletta, Tony Galletta and Christian Freezeland; great-great nieces and nephews, Tyler, Brendon, Colton, Ashley, and Amber Carstens; and a lifelong family friend, David Allen of Alton.

Preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joe; a great niece, Veronica Traci Galletta; a great nephew, Chad Ingram and great-great nephew, Ty Jones; her brother-in-law, by law, but in her heart he was a brother to her, Kenneth Freezeland.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Marks Mortuary with burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital.
