Betty Ratchford, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Saturday at the home of her daughter in Langhorn.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Edward and Helen Goddard Halligan, Betty was a graduate of St. Paul's High School and Wharton School of Business. Before retirement, she was employed as clerk of clerks at William J. Nealon Federal Courthouse. She was a member of St. Paul's Church and its Altar & Rosary Society, Ancient Order of Hibernians and served as president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Betty enjoyed quilting, traveling and being with family and friends. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed.
Surviving are four daughters, Ellen Caggiano and husband, Michael, Throop; Betsy Watkins and husband, Harry, Langhorn; Marie Demkosky and husband, Joseph, Throop; and Diane Tansits and husband, Ron, Jermyn; a son, Marty Ratchford and fiancée, Crystal Rose, Woodbridge, Va,; seven grandchildren, Greg Webber, Erin and Brigid Jennings, Katie Ratchford and Sarah, Megan and Colin Tansits; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Emily Webber; and several nieces and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary O'Hora.
The family would like to thank Mel Pepper, Linda Madrack and Tanya Fredricks for the kindness and compassion they showed Betty.
The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the McGoff Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
