Carolyn J. Rooney Cottrell

Carolyn J. Rooney Cottrell, 64, of Thompson, died Tuesday at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after an illness. Her husband is Earl Cottrell. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Rooney Sr., in 1999.

Born in Susquehanna, daughter of the late Raymond Rinker and Jacqueline Penn, she was a member of the Thompson and Clinton Center Baptist churches. Carolyn owned and operated Rooney's Ice Cream in Thompson, and was formerly employed at Barnes Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna and Gentex in Carbondale. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved to cook and was devoted to her family.

Also surviving are daughters, Lisa and Kevin Callender; and Joanna and Bradley Soden; son, Paul Jr. and Dawn Rooney; stepson, Earl Cottrell Jr.; stepdaughter, Aileen and William Shay; brother, Homer; stepbrother, Richard; sisters, Rita, Fran, Connie, Rena and Elaine; stepsisters, Kitty and Patty; grandchildren, Aaron, Natashia, Kaitlin, Brandon, Lauren, Cole, Kaylee and Travis; stepgrandchildren, Audree, Tosha and Cody; great-grandson, Matthew; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Thompson Baptist Church, with Pastor Loren Winn officiating. Burial will be in the Thompson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hennessey's Funeral Home, 747 Jackson Ave., Susquehanna. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the .
