Charles A. Scavo

Charles A. Scavo, 78, of Carbondale, died Thursday evening upon arrival at Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville. He was the husband of the former Gloria Gillott. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on Oct. 26.

Born March 23, 1935, in Carbondale, son of the late Anthony and Anna Balzano Scavo, he was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale and the Johnson Trade School in Scranton. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton and his master's degree from Millersville State College. He also attended Temple University. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Before his retirement in 1999, he had been employed as an industrial arts teacher in the Carbondale Area School District for 36 years. He had also worked at Takach's Grove in Greenfield Twp. for several years. He was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, where he was one of its first Eucharistic ministers. He served on the church's implementation team during the diocese's parish restructuring and was a current member of its finance committee. He was active with many of the parish's annual social functions.

He was an avid golfer and in his younger years had been an avid bowler.

He is survived by two children, Charles Scavo Jr. and attorney Cheryl Scavo, both of Alpharetta, Ga.; a sister, Catherine Cerra, Greenfield Twp.; a brother, Thomas Scavo and wife, Joan, Carbondale; and four nieces.

He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Thomas Cerra.

The funeral will be Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., Farview and 41st streets, Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook St., Carbondale. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
