David L. Benway Sr.

David L. Benway Sr., 85, of Scranton, formerly of New York City, died Saturday evening in the Allied Skilled Nursing Service, after a brief illness. He and his wife, the former Grace Stavola, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on June 16, 2012.

Born in Hoboken, N.J., son of the late David and Marie Cupo Benway, at age 17 he joined the Navy, serving in England during World War II. He was in the D-Day invasion and was commended with the Heroism Under Fire Medal. He was a former judge advocate and a member of the Catholic War Veterans. He graduated from Fordham University and St. John's University receiving his juris doctorate.

Before retirement, he was an international patent lawyer in New York City for 54 years.

Also surviving are a son, David L. Benway Jr. and wife, Debra, Scranton; two grandsons, David L. Benway IV, Scranton; and John A. Benway, Scranton.

A blessing service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton. Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Additional services will be held in Middle Village, N.Y., with interment in St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village.
