Donato Nicolais of Moosic died Sunday at the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Marion Ruth Perrick.
Born in Dunmore, son of the late Francesco and Lucia Stanco Nicolais, he was educated in Dunmore schools, proudly served in the Navy for more than 20 years and retired with the rank of chief petty officer. He then worked for Fitchburg Coated Products Inc. as a traffic manager.
Donato was a man who put everyone else before him, and volunteered more than 3,000 hours of his time to various groups and organizations. He was the deputy director of the retirees activity office, Department of the Air Force, and was twice nominated volunteer of the year, chaplain of the Northeast Retiree Air Force Wing; chief counselor of the retired service office, Department of the Army; representative on the executive board of voluntary service office, Department of Veterans Medical Affairs; counselor for the Bureau of Aging in Luzerne and Monroe counties; and secretary for the Fleet Service Association.
He was a lifetime member of the Green Ridge Assembly of God, where he served on its board. He was a longtime bookkeeper and Sunday school teacher and a member of the Traffic Club of Northeastern PA.
Above all, Donato was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Gentile and husband, Daniel, Hazleton; sons, David and wife, Darla, Berwick; and Daniel and wife Sarah, Clarks Summit; grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew Gentile, both of Hazleton; Lyndi Nicolais, California; Christopher Nicolais and wife, Chelsea, Maryland; and Bradley Nicolais, Virginia; sisters, Yolanda Casoria, Alabama; and Gloria Sames, Roaring Brook Twp.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Giovanni and John; and sisters, Jane and Antoinette.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Green Ridge Assembly of God Church, 825 Green Ridge St., Scranton, with the Rev. David A. Twiss, pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors, Marcy Cemetery, Duryea.
Friends may call Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., Scranton, and Thursday, 9 until service at the church.
