Elizabeth Byerly, 97, an 11-year resident of Mountain View Care Center, Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Williams, on May 14, 1952, and her second husband, Palmer Byerly, on Sept. 11, 1997.
Born in Taylor on July 23, 1915, daughter of the late William and Martha Havard Bowen, Elizabeth attended Taylor High School. She had lived at the Rome Air Depot for 10 years with her first husband before moving home and earning her practical nursing degree. Before her retirement, she worked for more than 25 years at the Clarks Summit State Hospital. A woman of strong faith, she was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle. A loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother, affectionately known as "Grandma Sure Sure" by those who loved her, she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Elmer and husband, David, Rome, N.Y.; and Judith Brigido and husband, the Rev. Carl, Scranton; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth and husband, Robert Quinn; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Walter Williams and wife, Evelyn; siblings, Richard, Benjamin, Al, John, Russell, Donald, William, David and Alma Bowen, and Gertrude McDonough; and a great-grandchild.
Her family would like to thank both Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli as well as the exceptional staff of Mountain View Care Center, especially Elizabeth's dear friend Betty, for all the care given throughout the years.
The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with services by the Rev. Carl Brigido, Elizabeth's son-in-law. Interment will follow in Forest Home Cemetery, Taylor.
