Gerald W. Marish died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Janet Schmidt Marish, Clarks Summit.
Born in Scranton on Nov. 9, 1957, son of the late Sally Matylewicz Palmer and Milton "Jeff" Marish, Jerry grew up on the Matylewicz farm in Lake Winola with his mom, grandparents, Adam and Helen Matylewicz; six uncles and two aunts. He graduated from Tunkhannock Area High School in 1976, and joined the Army
, where he was stationed in Germany for eight years. Upon his return to the United States, he eventually found his way back to Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Maryland and Keystone College, and worked as a supervisor at Catholic Social Services, Scranton, a job he truly loved, for the last 23 years.
He also loved his wife, Janet, his family, friends and his dog, Boris. Jerry was an avid gardener and enjoyed cheering on his New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers.
He is also survived by a stepmother, Ruth Marish, Clarksville, Tenn.; brother, John Palmer and wife, Sandra, Lake Winola; sisters, Colleen Ell and husband, David, Tunkhannock; Stephanie Jones and husband, David, Lake Winola; uncle, Bob Matylewicz; aunts, Barb Matylewicz and Thelma Shebby; his Shebby cousins, Lenny, Lynore, Janet, Eileen, Randy and Philip, who were like siblings to him; his in-laws; and many other special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a stepfather, Jack Palmer; grandparents; and many beloved uncles, aunts and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Lake, Lake Winola. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
