Giovina Sulla Salerno

Giovina Sulla Salerno of North Scranton died Saturday in Geisinger Community Medical Center. She and her husband, Joseph Salerno, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary July 11.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Peter and Maria Delefave Sulla, she was a graduate of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini grade school and St. Patrick's High School. She also attended Marywood College. Before retirement, she assisted her husband in the management of his business, Salerno Painting and Decorating Co. She was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, North Scranton, its Altar and Rosary Society and the Catholic Women's Club.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking and baking all of the traditional Italian dishes. She was a woman of style, elegance and grace. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Also surviving are two sons, Jude and wife, Rosemary, Scranton; and Joseph Jr. and wife, Ann Marie, Mountaintop; two daughters, Connie, Dunmore; and Mary Rose Smith and husband, Stafford, Waverly; 13 grandchildren, Diane, Matthew, Paul, Joseph III, Michelle, Mandy, Adam, Jeremie, Joshua, Giovina, Noah, Tiffany and Skyler; a great-grandson, Joshua Kyle; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Angelo Sulla.

Private funeral arrangements were conducted at the convenience of the family. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Lucy's Church, Scranton, in fulfillment of Giovina's wish to have her funeral Mass in the same church where she married her husband, Joseph, on July 11, 1953. Entombment Cathedral Cemetery.
