Gloria McCullough

Gloria McCullough, 72, of Honesdale, research librarian of the Wayne County Historical Society, died Thursday, Aug. 22, at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.

She was the widow of William Lloyd and John McCullough and is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Giamanco of Honesdale; granddaughter, Lindsay Yarashus; sisters, Joan (Ron) Yankay, Gail (Bill) Legg and Paula (Joe) Viccica; stepdaughter, Lauren McCullough; nieces, nephews and beloved pets, Emma, Buddy and Percival Leo.

Gloria was born in Pittston on May 7, 1941, daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth Gibbons Romanouskas. She was also predeceased in death by sons, Stephen and Matthew Yarashus; and beloved pets, Sam and Ace.

Before moving to Wayne County 20 years ago, Gloria worked at Eckley Miners Village and joined the staff of the Wayne County Historical Society soon after her arrival. Gloria was more knowledgeable about Wayne County history than most natives and a genealogist revered by researchers nationwide. She had a passion for accuracy, disproving myths wherever she found them. She wrote the Wayne Independent's weekly "In Days Gone By" and wrote, with Ann O'Hara, "Murder, Mayhem and Sundry Misadventures in Wayne County, Pennsylvania" in 2006.

Gloria was loved by her adoptive community and she loved Wayne County. Her last moments were spent in the line of duty as a historian.

Her family and friends are grateful beyond words for the efforts of the Honesdale Police Department, Wayne Ambulance, Dr. Shripatha Holla and the entire staff of Geisinger Community Medical Center.

Gloria was a member of the O'Neill Society of the Wayne County Community Foundation.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dessin Animal Shelter or the Wayne County Historical Society would be welcome.

Friends may visit on Monday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 N. Main St., Honesdale, PA 18431. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
