Helen Louise Mitchell Brown, 82, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Sunday at home after an illness. She was the widow of Charles L. "Brownie" Brown, who died April 23, 1971.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Helen and Robert Mitchell Sr., she was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church and Shiloh Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and a graduate of Marywood College, class of 1953, earning a bachelor's degree in education. She was hired in 1953 to teach in Scranton schools and was the first black teacher in Scranton. She retired after 39 years of teaching, both at James Madison and Prescott Elementary Schools. She was a volunteer for the United Neighborhood Centers and was honored for her years of service.
She enjoyed watching movies, especially with her daughter.
Surviving are a daughter, Lynne Donne White and husband, James William White III, Taylors, S.C.; a niece, Donna; a nephew, Davey Mitchell; and a great-niece, Devonna Mitchell.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Mitchell Jr. and David Mitchell.
The funeral will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, with services at 11 in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 714-716 Washington Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Tawan Edward Bailey, pastor. Interment will be private. Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
