James P. Cavanaugh

James P. Cavanaugh, 56, of Simpson, died Wednesday morning at home after a brief illness.

Born in Scott Twp., he was the son of Karl and Shirley McAndrew Cavanaugh. A 1974 graduate of Lakeland High School, Jim went on to serve on the USCGC Morgenthau in the Coast Guard. Jim worked for more than 15 years as a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Waymart until his retirement. He was a member of the Shopa-Davey VFW in Peckville, the American Legion in Blakely and the Scott Twp. Lions Club.

Known by everyone as Swampy, Jim loved to golf and was seldom seen without a crossword puzzle in hand. He was always good for a laugh and he was an epic storyteller. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Also surviving are a brother, Jeff Cavanaugh and wife, Sandy, Odessa, Fla.; a sister, Jill Weigel and husband, Greg, Boise, Idaho; three nephews, Jeff Cavanaugh and his wife, Erika, Mechanicsburg; Tom Cavanaugh, Asolo, Italy; and Thaddeus Weigel, Princeton, N.J.; and a niece, Dessie Weigel, Boise.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Cavanaugh.

The funeral will be Saturday from the James M. Margotta Funeral Home, 1019 Main St., Peckville, with Mass at 10 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church, Montdale. Interment will take place at Valley View Memorial Park, Montdale.
