Jean E. Hughes

Jean E. Hughes, 91, of Scranton, died Wednesday at VNA Hospice. Her husband, Harold L. Hughes, died in 1969.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mabel Davis Hughes. She was a 1939 graduate of Scranton Technical High School and for many years worked as a clerk for the CC Young Insurance Agency in Scranton. She was a member of the Embury United Methodist Church, was a member of the choir and a member of the United Methodist Women, where she had served as secretary, and was a Girl Scout leader with the troop at the Simpson United Methodist Church. During WWII, she was involved with the Ladies Card Club, which was a group of wives of service members and men who supported the war locally.

Surviving are a son, Robert and wife, Diane of Scranton; a daughter, Dorothy of Scranton; a son, James and wife, Genie of North Carolina; a daughter, Nancy Staff and husband, Charles of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Marcy, David; Jeffery and wife, Kristen Hughes; Jennifer and Matthew Brewer, Jimmy Hughes, Olivia and Caleb Staff; five great-grandchildren, Regan, Colby, Connor, Ethan and Jacob.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Jacob Davis Funeral Home, 422 S. Main St., Taylor, with services by Rev. Linda Eckersley, pastor of the Embury United Methodist Church, Scranton. Interment will be at Moscow Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Embury United Methodist Church, S. Main Ave. and Bryn Mawr St., Scranton, PA 18504 or VNA Hospice, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, PA.
