John R. Gretkowski, 82, of Dickson City, died Sunday in the hospice unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Sanderson, who died in 1973, and his second wife, Diane Yazinski, who died in 1993.
Born in Olyphant, son of the late John R. and Helen Novojosky Gretkowski, he graduated from Olyphant High School, and served with the Army
during the Korean War
. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 5937, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11 and American Legion Post 665, all of Dickson City. Before retirement, he was employed by Chesapeake Paper Products, Scranton.
John's family would like to thank Bill and Lorraine Hutchins for all their time and loving care, and Geisinger CMC and its hospice staff for their kind and compassionate care.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Hopkins and fiancé, Chris Bellas, Olyphant; Danielle Mark and husband, Thomas, Carbondale; and Nicole Vandervort and fiancé, Ken Jackson, Throop; a son, Scott Vandervort and girlfriend, Kim Novak, Olyphant; grandchildren, Ryan Shaffer, Delaney Hopkins, Shawna Van-Why, Chelesa McDermott and Brandon Mark; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, John Gretkowski III; and a son, John Vandervort.
