Joseph J. Cole Sr. of Scranton died Monday at home. He and his wife, the former Gail Ann Scrip, would have celebrated 50 years of marriage Aug. 26.
Born in Elmira, N.Y., son of the late Edgar J. and Dorothy M. Carleton Cole, he was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church and was educated in South Side High School, Elmira, N.Y. Joe was employed by John's Bargain Store and, before retirement, at Kmart.
He enjoyed camping and trips to Atlantic City. Joe was a loving husband, father and brother, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Frank and Dorthea Henry Cancer Center for the kindness and compassion which was shown to Joe and his family.
Also surviving are a son, Joseph J. Cole Jr. and wife, Linda, Old Forge; two daughters, Kelly Ann Harron and husband, Scott, Jamesville, N.Y.; and Brenda Lee Zarick and husband, James, Scranton; seven grandchildren, Nicole and Kaylee Zarick; Nicholas and Jacob Harron; Caitlyn, Lauren and Anthony Cole; two brothers, Edward Cole, Landsdale; and Robert Cole, Elmira; five sisters, Madeline DeChant, Elmira; Margaret Lockin, Escondido, Calif.; Dorothy Ryan, Hendersonville, N.C.; Nancy Curtiss, Saginaw, Mich.; and Mary Brown, Elmira, N.Y.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter A. and James Cole.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Davies & Jones Funeral Chapel, 135 S. Main Ave., Scranton, with services by the Rev. Howard T. Woodruff, senior pastor of Elm Park United Methodist Church. Interment, private at the convenience of the family.
