Joseph L. Mecca, 80, of Jessup, passed away suddenly April 9, 2013, at VNA Hospice Geisinger Community Medical Center. His wife of 55 years is the former Rose Marie DeSantis.
"Banana" as he was affectionately known, was born in Dunmore on October 20, 1932. He was the son of the late Peter and Carmella Stolfi Mecca. He was a graduate of Dunmore High School and was a master sergeant in the United States Air Force
during the Korean War
and Gulf War. He was employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot until his retirement. After retirement, he was chief assistant at Dino's Breakfast and Lunch with his beloved family. He was a member of Queen of Angels Parish, St. Mary's Assumption Church, the Dunmore Rome Club and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars
Joe loved to spend time with his family and friends, and when he was not enjoying Atlantic City or Las Vegas, he would help his son Dino at his restaurant. He passed away surrounded by his family and friends who know that he will always be looking down at them from heaven.
Also surviving are a son, Dino and wife, Susan, Jessup; a daughter, Rose Ann Povanda and husband, Dr. Paul Povanda, Horseheads, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jake and Jared Povanda, Horseheads; Christopher Kintner and wife, Dr. Amy Burns, Arlington, Va.; great-granddaughter, Reagan Kintner, Arlington; a sister, Angela Spindler, Levittown, N.Y.; nieces, Mary Beth Killian, Scranton; Carmel Ann Gevaras, Dunmore; Sharon Pinner and Carolyn Hakim, Levittown, N.Y.; Michele Testa, N.C.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Mecca; and a nephew, Peter Mecca.
The funeral will be Friday from the Louis M. Margotta Funeral Home, 511 Church St., Jessup, with Mass at a time to be announced in St. Michael's Church. Interment, St. Mary's Assumption Cemetery, Montdale.
