Josephine M. Duchnowski

Josephine M. Duchnowski, 89, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, April 1, at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Anthony J. Duchnowski Sr., who died on September 15, 2011.

Josephine was born in Throop on November 5, 1923, the daughter of the late Carmine and Jessie Mazzatta. She attended Throop High School and was employed at the Grove Silk Mill in Dunmore until her marriage to Tony on February 5, 1955. Josephine was a homemaker who enjoyed being a "stay-at-home" Mom, baking homemade cookies and breads, sewing clothes for herself and her daughter, and spending time with family and friends. She took pride in her children and never missed an activity that they were involved in. This tradition was continued with her grandson, Anthony. She was a loving and devoted person who enjoyed caring for her family, and sharing stories about the "old days." She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Josephine's hobbies included shopping on Saturday mornings with her sisters, playing bingo and traveling. Josephine traveled with Tony extensively throughout the United States to attend his Army Air Force reunions. Josephine was the "matriarch" of the family who hosted many holiday gatherings, picnics and dinners.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the former Evergreen Health Care Center, the Green Ridge Health Care Center, the Moses Taylor Hospital and Dr. Charles Deck for their kindness and support.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Paone and her husband, Joseph, Peckville; a son, Anthony Jr. and his wife, Cathy, Dunmore; and a grandson, Anthony, Dunmore.
