Laura Youorski

Laura Youorski, 51, of Olyphant, died Saturday evening at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Arthur and Ann Lee Jones Youorski, she was a graduate of Mid Valley High School, class of 1979, and a member of Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick's Church in Olyphant. She graduated from Lackawanna Junior College in 1981 and Slippery Rock University in 1983, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management. She later received her teaching certificate from Penn State University and taught health and physical education at North Pocono High School for the past 15 years, a position she was born for. She also received her Master of Science degree from Wilkes University in 2000. Laura was a member of the Elmhurst Country Club.

She loved to play golf and be out on her boat and enjoyed all types of outdoor activities and sports, which she excelled in both in high school and college. She was a terrific daughter, sister, aunt, friend and teacher who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by five sisters, Linda and husband, Joseph Sablan, South Abington Twp.; Denise, Greenfield Twp.; Janice and husband, Thomas Devaney, East Stroudsburg; Kim and husband, Mark Mecca, Jessup; and Sherry and husband, Mark Adams, Peckville; seven nieces, MollyAnn, Brittney (goddaughter) and Kelly Mecca; Jessa Sablan, Amanda, Samantha and Makenna Adams (goddaughter); two nephews, Matthew Mecca and Trevor Sablan; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the John J. Turko & Sons Funeral Home, 404 Susquehanna Ave., Olyphant, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick's Church, Delaware Avenue, Olyphant, to be celebrated by Monsignor Michael J. Delaney, pastor. Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
